General
The automatic interior lighting control switches the various lamps of the interior lighting on and off automatically under certain conditions.
Function
Automatic interior light control on cars
Sun visor mirror lamps
The mirror lamps in the sun visors are switched on and off by unfolding or folding the respective mirror cover.
The signal acquisition and actuation module or the front signal acquisition and actuation module sends a signal for activating the function to the overhead control panel control unit. This enables the power supply for the function. If the mirror cover is folded up, the electric circuit is closed and the respective mirror lamp lights up.
The mirror lamps are automatically switched off:
- 30 min after circuit 15 off
- When locking the vehicle via the central locking
Glove compartment illumination
Additional function requirements:
- Circuit 15R on
The glove compartment lighting is switched on and off by opening or closing the glove compartment.
The signal acquisition and actuation module or the front signal acquisition and actuation module releases the power supply for the function. If the glove compartment flap is opened, the electric circuit closes and the glove compartment lamp lights up.
The glove compartment lighting switches off automatically:
- 30 min after circuit 15 off
- When locking the vehicle via the central locking
Search and symbol illumination
The search and symbol lighting makes it easier for the vehicle occupants to find important control elements without having to switch on the interior or exterior lighting.
The search and symbol lighting is switched on if at least one of the following deliverables is met:
- Standing lights or low beam are switched on manually via the rotary light switch
- Instrument cluster is switched on and detects "Night".
The instrument cluster switches on in the following situations:
- Unlocking of vehicle (not via emergency key)
- Opening a vehicle door
- Change to circuit 15 status
The instrument cluster evaluates the incoming information and generates the circuit 58d signal. The instrument cluster transmits the signal to the corresponding control units for actuating the search and symbol lighting.
The search and symbol lighting actuates, depending on the equipment, the illumination of the following component parts:
- Switches and buttons
- Door handles
- Cup holder
- Stowage compartment in the front center console (e.g. stowage area for inductive charging)
- Center console
The luminosity is regulated via the instrument lighting brightness control at the exterior lights switch.
If the standing lights or low beam is not switched on manually via the rotary light switch, the search and symbol lighting switches off after the following events:
- The vehicle is locked (after 3 s)
- The instrument cluster detects "Day"
- The instrument cluster is switched off (30 s after circuit 15 off)
In the case of active warning messages, it can take longer than 30 s for the instrument cluster and therefore also the search and symbol lighting to switch off.
The search and symbol lighting actuates the door handle lighting after switching off circuit 15C for an additional 2 min (run-on).
For sedans with Canada or USA version, the search and symbol lighting actuates the illumination for trunk lid emergency opening function switch irrespective of the circuit 58d. While doing so, the illumination flashes green for 60 min after the trunk lid is closed with a frequency of 1 Hz.
Comfort switch and controls illumination
The comfort search lighting is a search and symbol lighting with a longer switch-off delay time. It is activated by the search and symbol lighting.
Contrary to the search and symbol lighting, if the interior lighting is switched on, the symbols in the overhead control panel as well as the grab handle lamps light up with 100 % brightness.
Locator lighting
Function requirements:
- The automatic interior lighting control is switched on via the button in the overhead control panel.
When unlocking the vehicle (except via the emergency key), the locator lighting switches on. The locator lighting actuates the following lamps depending on the equipment:
- Dome lamp
- Interior lights
- Reading lamps
- Footwell lights
- Load compartment lamps
The locator lighting switches off automatically:
- Vehicle stillstand (0 km/h)
- Doors closed
- Locator lighting not active
- Interior lighting switch-off delay time function via the multimedia system is switched on.
The orientation lighting switches on after the end of the journey after the following actions:
- Opening driver seat belt buckle
- Switching off circuit 15 or circuit 15C
The orientation lighting actuates the following lamps after the end of the journey:
- Dome lamp
- Interior lights
- Reading lamps
- Footwell lights
- Incident light in inside rearview mirror
- Load compartment lamps
The orientation lighting is automatically switched off after the end of the journey:
- 40 s after the vehicle is unlocked
- 6 s after the vehicle is locked
Orientation lighting after the end of the journey
Function requirements:
- After 30 s have passed
- 6 s after the vehicle is locked
Orientation lighting on entering and exiting
Function requirements:
- Automatic interior lighting control switched on via the button in the overhead control panel
The orientation lighting on entering and exiting switches on when a vehicle door is opened. The orientation lighting on entering and exiting actuates the following lamps depending on the equipment:
- Dome lamp
- Interior lights
- Reading lamps
- Footwell lights
- Incident light in inside rearview mirror
- Load compartment lamps
- Exit and warning lamps of the opened doors
- Illuminated door sill molding
The illuminated door sill moldings switch on with different maximum values depending on the day/night detection of the instrument cluster.
The orientation lighting on entering and exiting switches off automatically:
- When "circuit 15 off" and when vehicle door is open after 5 min have passed
- After the last vehicle door is closed after 8 s have passed
Trunk/load compartment lighting
Function requirements:
- Vehicle stationary
When opening the trunk lid or liftgate, the trunk/load compartment lighting switches on. The trunk/load compartment lighting actuates the following lamps:
- Trunk/load compartment lamps
- Ambient lamps and warning lamps for trunk lid/liftgate
- Symbol lighting of the trunk lid/liftgate control button
After the trunk lid or the liftgate is closed, the trunk/load compartment lighting is switched off.
The trunk/load compartment lighting is automatically switched off when the trunk lid or liftgate is opened:
- After 10 min
- A specified speed threshold is exceeded
Interior lighting during ATA alarm
Immediately after triggering an ATA alarm, the signal acquisition and actuation module or the front signal acquisition and actuation module activates the following interior lighting functions:
- Locator lighting
- Search and symbol illumination
- Ambient lighting (depending on the equipment)
The ambient lighting flashes blue and red during an ATA alarm.
The ambient lighting is actuated by the ambient lighting control unit.
Interior lighting after accident
Function requirements:
- Vehicle stationary
- Detected accident with airbag deployment
After an accident with airbag deployment, the signal acquisition and actuation module or the front signal acquisition and actuation module activates the following interior lighting functions:
- Locator lighting
- Search and symbol illumination
- Ambient lighting (depending on the equipment)
The ambient lighting lights up red with full brightness after an accident.
Automatic interior light control on off-road vehicles
When the stealth light function is activated (depending on the equipment installed), the interior lighting is deactivated.
Orientation lighting on entering and exiting or loading
Function requirements:
- The low beam is activated via the exterior lights switch.
- The automatic interior light control is switched on via the button in the respective interior lamp.
- The automatic interior light control is switched on via the corresponding menu in the instrument cluster.
The front interior lamp switches on when one of the front doors is opened.
The rear interior lamp (depending on the Model) switches on when one of the rear doors or the rear-end door is opened.
Search and symbol illumination
The search and symbol lighting makes it easier for the vehicle occupants to find important control elements without having to switch on the interior or exterior lighting.
The search and symbol lighting is switched on if the following prerequisite is met:
- Standing lights or low beam are switched on manually via the rotary light switch
The signal acquisition and actuation module generates the circuit 58d signal. The module additionally transmits this signal to the corresponding control units for actuating the search and symbol lighting.
The search and symbol lighting actuates, depending on the equipment, the illumination of the following component parts:
- Switches and buttons
- Center console
The luminosity is set by the user via the instrument cluster. The setting is only possible for night mode. In day mode, the brightness remains unchangeable at 100 %. Switching on the low beam via the exterior lights switch causes the change from day mode to night mode.
An exception is the headlamp range adjuster control element on vehicles without stealth light function. The symbol lighting with circuit 15 is only actuated for this case.
