The ceramic friction surface (1) of the brake disk is by design very brittle, and therefore it is sensitive to loads such as runout, camber, torsion and bending. Always handle brake disks with the utmost care. Ceramic brake disks with excessive cracking, breakouts and chipping must not be used.
The following process must be followed for ceramic brake disks:
- For wheel combination components (wheel, ceramic brake disk, wheel hub), it must be ensured that the vehicle-specific rated torque is first reached in step 3.
- No machining must be carried out; no stock removal must take place.
- The fasteners (2) must not be loosened or retightened.
- They must not be blocked or removed/installed with hammers, levers, pliers or other tools.
- Do not apply lateral forces (parallel to rotational axis) (e.g. fastening through safety screw only).
- Do not apply axial forces at brake disk bowl (3) and at circumference of brake disk.
- They must not come into contact with cleaners, lubricants or operating fluids.
- They must only be set down on the brake disk bowl (3) and not upright or on the friction surface (1).
- Do not use ceramic brake disks anymore after a shock, impact or after being dropped.
- They may only be stored and transported in suitable containers.
While carrying out the following operations, be very careful with the ceramic brake disks so as to avoid damage to the friction surface (1):
- When detaching/attaching wheel and tire assemblies.
- During removal/installation of brake calipers, brake linings and brake disks.
- While working in the area of the wheel arches, e.g. removing/installing suspension struts, transverse control arms, stabilizer bars etc.
- While lowering vehicle with removed wheel and tire assemblies.
Avoid any shocks, impacts to the friction surface (1) (e.g. on mount carrier) or use installed disk as padding/supporting surface (e.g. for steering knuckle)
Avoid metallic end stops (damage to ceramic brake disk)
Only turn the steering by turning the steering wheel, not by pulling or pushing on the brake caliper and ceramic brake disk.
Otherwise the ceramic brake disk may become damaged.
