AIR BODY CONTROL, general
AIR BODY CONTROL is the combination of multiple-chamber air suspension and continuous damping adjustment. Both damping and suspension at each individual wheel are adapted to the ambient conditions. Level control ensures optimum suspension and constant ground clearance even when the vehicle is loaded. To improve driving safety and reduce fuel consumption, the vehicle is lowered automatically at higher speeds. Furthermore, it is also possible to adjust the vehicle level manually.
To realize various compliance characteristics, the air suspension bellows consist of several air chambers which are connected or disconnected to each other by switching the air suspension valves.
The AIR BODY CONTROL function includes the following subfunctions:
- Wake-up mode
- Level control
- Damping adjustment
- System and warning messages
- Lock position
Wake-up mode, function
After the vehicle is unlocked, the AIR BODY CONTROL unit is activated by the active suspension FlexRay in order to check the current vehicle level. The AIR BODY CONTROL unit detects critical statuses as faults, e.g. low vehicle level to the front axle, in which the full wheel angle is not guaranteed. In the instrument cluster, the driver is made aware of this situation by the message "Vehicle being raised, please wait".
If the vehicle has not been used for a long time (less than 4 h), it is raised to the normal level when the engine is started. If an increased vehicle level was set during the last journey or the vehicle's off-time is less than 4 h, the vehicle level last set is retained.

Additional function requirements for level control
- Engine running
The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI control unit sends the "Engine running" signal via the drive train CAN, powertrain control unit and chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
Level control
The level control system controls the air suspension individually at each wheel. Under normal operating conditions, the air suspension operates with different pressures depending on the load. To supply compressed air, the AIR BODY CONTROL unit actuates the AIR BODY CONTROL compressor via the AIR BODY CONTROL relay in the engine fuse and relay module. On model 213.217/227/237, model 213.0 (except 213.016/053) up to model year 2018, model 213.016/053/1/2 (except 213.217/227/237) up to model year 2019 a pressure reservoir is also installed that acts as a buffer during supply shortages.
Depending on the selected transmission mode, the vehicle level is reduced or increased and can also be changed by pressing the vehicle level button in the left lower control panel.
Selection of transmission mode
When the DYNAMIC SELECT switch is operated on the left lower control panel (automatic transmission) or the right lower control panel (manual transmission), the driver can choose between pre-configured drive programs or an individual drive program. Depending on the selected transmission program, one of the following settings is activated for the suspension:
- Comfort
- Sport
- Sport Plus
The left lower control panel or the right lower control panel sends the status of the DYNAMIC SELECT switch over the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel or the touchpad, telematics CAN, head unit, user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the suspension FlexRay to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit then sends the request for the selected transmission mode via the chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
The symbol for the selected transmission mode is displayed in the instrument cluster. The current transmission mode settings are also briefly shown in the Audio/COMAND display.
The AIR BODY CONTROL unit sends information about the selected transmission mode via the chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the head unit and to the instrument cluster. The head unit generates the corresponding image data and sends a switch-on request to the Audio/COMAND display via telematics CAN. The image data is transmitted via the highspeed video link to the Audio/COMAND display.
Selection of the transmission mode also affects adjustment of the damping.
Selection of vehicle level
At a speed below 80 km/h the driver can adjust the vehicle level by using one of the following buttons:
- Vehicle level button in left lower control panel (with automatic transmission, except engine 177, 256, 276)
- Vehicle level button in right lower control panel (with manual transmission, except engine 177, 256, 276)
- Vehicle level button in driver's side instrument panel button group (with engine 177, 256, 276)
He can choose between the following vehicle levels:
- Normal (for normal road conditions)
- Increased (for operation with snow chains or for very poor road conditions)
The left lower control panel or right lower control panel sends the status of the vehicle level button over the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel or touchpad, telematics CAN, head unit, user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the suspension FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit. The AIR BODY CONTROL unit sends the request in the reverse direction to switch the LED in vehicle level button in the left lower control panel or right lower control panel on or off.
The driver's side instrument panel button group sends the status of the vehicle level button over the instrument panel LIN, front SAM CONTROL unit, interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the suspension FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit. The AIR BODY CONTROL unit sends the request in the reverse direction to switch the LED in vehicle level button on or off to the driver's side instrument panel button group.
The LED is switched on when the vehicle is at the increased level.
An appropriate message additionally appears in the instrument cluster. The AIR BODY CONTROL unit sends the request to output a message via the chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
Detection of vehicle level
The vehicle level is detected for each individual wheel by the following sensors:
- Left front level sensor
- Right front level sensor
- Left rear level sensor
- Right rear level sensor
The AIR BODY CONTROL unit reads in the signals from the level sensors directly and evaluates them.
Adjust vehicle level
By increasing the air pressure in one of the multiple-chamber spring bellows, the vehicle level is increased at the wheel concerned. Conversely, the vehicle level is reduced if air is released from the multiple-chamber spring bellows. The compressed-air supply system for the multichamber air suspension bellows is provided by the AIR BODY CONTROL compressor and on model 213.217/227/237, model 213.0 (except 213.016/053) up to model year 2018, model 213.016/053/1/2 (except 213.217/227/237) up to model year 2019 over the AIR BODY CONTROL pressure reservoir.
The AIR BODY CONTROL unit actuates the AIR BODY CONTROL compressor through the AIR BODY CONTROL relay, the AIR BODY CONTROL pressure reservoir filling valve (model 213.217/227/237, model 213.0 (except 213.016/053) up to model year 2018, model 213.016/053/1/2 (except 213.217/227/237) up to model year 2019) and the corresponding level control valves directly. To protect against overloading, the AIR BODY CONTROL unit monitors the operating time of the AIR BODY CONTROL compressor. When the maximum operating time is reached, the AIR BODY CONTROL unit switches off the AIR BODY CONTROL compressor for the duration of the cooling-down phase. On model 213.217/227/237, model 213.0 (except 213.016/053) up to model year 2018, model 213.016/053/1/2 (except 213.217/227/237) up to model year 2019, the pressure in the pressure reservoir is recorded by the AIR BODY CONTROL pressure sensor. The AIR BODY CONTROL unit reads in the signals from the AIR BODY CONTROL pressure sensor directly.
Increasing vehicle level
- AIR BODY CONTROL compressor ON (if pressure in pressure reservoir is insufficient (model 213.217/227/237, model 213.0 (except 213.016/053) up to model year 2018, model 213.016/053/1/2 (except 213.217/227/237) up to model year 2019))
- AIR BODY CONTROL pressure reservoir filling valve open (model 213.217/227/237, model 213.0 (except 213.016/053) up to model year 2018, model 213.016/053/1/2 (except 213.217/227/237) up to model year 2019)
- Corresponding level control valve CLOSED
- AIR BODY CONTROL pressure relief valve CLOSED
Reduce vehicle level
- AIR BODY CONTROL compressor OFF
- AIR BODY CONTROL pressure reservoir filling valve closed (model 213.217/227/237, model 213.0 (except 213.016/053) up to model year 2018, model 213.016/053/1/2 (except 213.217/227/237) up to model year 2019)
- Corresponding level control valve CLOSED
- AIR BODY CONTROL pressure relief valve OPEN
To control the compressed air supply, the AIR BODY CONTROL unit additionally evaluates the atmospheric pressure and the intake air temperature. The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI control unit sends corresponding information via the drive train CAN, powertrain control unit and chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
To realize various compliance characteristics, the air suspension bellows consist of several air chambers which are connected or disconnected to each other by switching the air suspension valves. The AIR BODY CONTROL unit sends a corresponding request via the chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL Plus control unit which then actuates the respective air suspension valves directly.

Damping adjustment
The continuous damping adjustment function adapts the damping at each individual wheel. This improves driving safety and driving comfort.
Adjustment of the damping depends on the following factors:
- Driving style (e.g. sporty)
- Road surface condition (e.g. surface undulations)
- Vehicle load
- Selected transmission mode
Information on selecting the transmission mode is given in the section "Level control".
The damping is adjusted harder or softer depending on the driving situation. If the sensor system detects a sporty driving style for example, the comfortable basic damping becomes harder automatically. The electronics works continuously within a broadly spread damping performance map. The damping force is adapted at each individual wheel. As a result, the vehicle rolls smoothly even on poor road surfaces, without impairing driving stability. The previously set damping stage is active when the ignition is switched on.
Recording of driving condition
The driving condition is defined through the following variables:
- Vehicle body acceleration (chassis movement)
- Vehicle longitudinal and lateral acceleration
The vehicle body acceleration on model 213.0 (except 213.016/053) up to model year 2018, model 213.016/053/1/2 up to model year 2019 recorded by the following sensors:
- Left front body lateral acceleration sensor
- Right front body lateral acceleration sensor
- Left rear body lateral acceleration sensor
The AIR BODY CONTROL unit reads in the signals from the acceleration sensors directly. On model 213.0 (except 213.016/053) as of model year 2018, model 213.016/053/1/2 as of model year 2019, the vehicle body acceleration is derived from the following information that describes the driving condition:
- The Electronic Stability Program control unit sends information about the wheel speeds, the brake status and the braking torque over the suspension FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
- The supplemental restraint system control unit sends information about the turn rate, the lateral acceleration and the longitudinal acceleration via the vehicle dynamics CAN, the Electronic Stability Program control unit and the chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
The AIR BODY CONTROL unit also receives the following information over the suspension FlexRay. This taken into consideration when calculating the ideal damping stage or damping force to be used at each shock absorber:
- Body variant
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the body variant via the chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
- Type of drive
The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI control unit sends the drive type via the drive train CAN, powertrain control unit and chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
- Steering wheel angle and steering wheel velocity:
The steering column tube module control unit sends the steering wheel angle and the steering wheel velocity via the chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
- Kickdown request (with automatic transmission)
The powertrain control unit sends the accelerator pedal position via the chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
- Displayed vehicle speed
The instrument cluster sends the displayed vehicle speed as a substitute valve via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
- Request by Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)
In critical driving situations, the Electronic Stability Program control unit sends the request to switch over the damping stage via the chassis FlexRay to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
Damping adjustment
The AIR BODY CONTROL unit uses the input signals (driving condition) to determine the ideal damping stage in each case and then actuates the following assembly parts directly:
- Left front axle damping valve unit:
- Solenoid valve 1, front left
- Solenoid valve 2, front left
- Right front axle damping valve unit:
- Solenoid valve 1, front right
- Solenoid valve 2, front right
- Left rear axle damping valve unit:
- Solenoid valve 1, rear left
- Solenoid valve 2, rear left
- Right rear axle damping valve unit:
- Solenoid valve 1, rear right
- Solenoid valve 2, rear right
The continuous damping adjustment is implemented using single-tube gas-filled shock absorbers. The damping valve units are located at the bottom side on the single-tube gas-filled shock absorbers.
One check valve each is integrated in the main piston and in the bottom valve of the single-tube gas-filled shock absorbers. These check valves ensure that an identical flow direction is given through the damping valve unit, both in the rebound and the compression stages. This design enables the damping valve unit of a shock absorber to consist of a single regulated proportional valve only.
The flow area in the damping valve unit can be continuously adjusted through actuation of this proportional valve. More or less oil can flow through the damping valve unit to match the set cross section. The damping behavior then becomes correspondingly softer or harder.
When ESP® is activated the damping is automatically switched to the hard damping stage (Sport) irrespective of the driver's request. This enables the vehicle to be stabilized faster. The hard damping stage remains active for as long as the driving situation requires this.
Additional function requirements for system and warning messages
- Terminal 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 via the interior CAN to the AIR BODY CONTROL unit.
System and warning messages
Various texts with safety and system-relevant contents are displayed in the instrument cluster. These contents are prioritized accordingly depending on the severity of a fault and the urgency of the remedy. If several faults exist at the same time, then several texts will be output.
The AIR BODY CONTROL unit sends corresponding requests via the chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
Texts displayed in instrument cluster:
- Vehicle rises
- Vehicle being raised, wait briefly (plus acoustic warning)
- STOP, vehicle too low (text in red, plus acoustic warning)
- Malfunction
Lock position
When raising the vehicle, e.g. using a jack, air would be permanently vented from the spring bellows to lower the vehicle. To prevent this from happening, this reduction in wheel load must be automatically detected thereby activating a lock position. To determine whether the vehicle has been raised, a small amount of compressed air is released. If the level sensors do not detect a change in the vehicle level, the locking position is activated.
The locking position is a pure software function which prevents the actuation of the level control valves (draining process). The locking position is activated by the AIR BODY CONTROL unit by evaluating the signals from the level sensors. There is no fault entry and no display in the instrument cluster.
At a vehicle speed above 10 km/h, the locking position is canceled automatically. The level control system is then in operation again.
Actuation of the output stages in the AIR BODY CONTROL unit via the diagnosis is always possible irrespective of the locking position.
