General

Depending on the country and vehicle, headlamp projection enables lines, symbols and animations to be projected onto the road surface in various gray levels. This is made possible by a light module in which there are more than 1.2 million mirrors. These in turn are illuminated by three high-performance LEDs, thereby projecting the light onto the roadway.

Function requirements

Function

The sensor system (camera and sensor technology) installed can be used to continuously collect and evaluate the environment information, and to provide it to the driver visually. This is done using projections from the headlamps on the roadway - in the form of lines, symbols, and animations in grayscale with a color depth of up to 8 bit. The light source module, which generates the projection, consists of a digital light processor. Depending on the request or required projection, it regulates the actuation of the three installed high-performance diodes as well as adjustment of the high-resolution micromirrors in the digital micromirror unit.

The headlamp projection function with the DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps provides the following projections, e.g.:

Construction site warning

Construction site detection is regulated by the driver assistance system. A vehicle speed of ≥ 30 km/h must be reached for this. If the requirements are fulfilled, the construction site warning projection (1) is briefly projected for the driver at a distance of approx. 13 m in front of the vehicle.

Guide lines

If the vehicle is passing through a construction site at a vehicle speed of ≥ 30 km/h, the guide lines projection (2) is activated and is projected onto the road approx. 10 m in front of the vehicle. The guide lines correspond to the overall width of the vehicle and extend over a total length of approx. 18 m. The curvature of the guide lines projection (2) corresponds to the swivel angle of the headlamp, which takes into account information such as the wheel angle and the yaw rate. The guide lines projection (2) remains constant while the vehicle passes through the construction site. When the vehicle has passed through the construction site (i.e. a construction site is no longer detected), the guide lines projection (2) is ended.

Wrong-way warning

If a vehicle movement contrary to the permitted direction of travel is detected from a vehicle speed ≥ 30 km/h, the projection wrong-way warning (3) is projected approx.. 11 m in front of the vehicle.

Red traffic light warning

If it is detected that the vehicle may potentially run through a red traffic light from a vehicle speed ≥ 30 km/h due to the speed not being reduced, the projection red traffic light warning (4) is projected in front of the vehicle.

Stop warning

If, at a vehicle speed ≥ 30 km/h, potential crossing of a stop line at a stop sign is detected, the red traffic light warning projection (5) is projected in front of the vehicle.

Spotlight and marker

Information such as speed, distance, etc. to other road users, (e.g. pedestrians, cyclists, etc) is collected and evaluated via the camera and sensor systems. If a vehicle speed ≥ 30 km/h is reached during dawn, dusk, or night-time driving, or when driving in an unlit areas, and road users are detected while doing so, up to 4 objects can be displayed to the driver at the same time. The spotlight and marker projection (6) is projected to the driver approx. 15 m in front of the vehicle. The road users are illuminated directly here, whereby the heads of persons are omitted or only illuminated indirectly in order to reliably prevent the persons from being dazzled. Furthermore, the driver is visually informed of the direction of motion of the road users by means of circular markers.

Presentation lighting, headlamp switch-off delay/locator lighting projection

When the vehicle is unlocked, the headlamp switch-off delay projection (10) is started, and when the vehicle is locked, the locator lighting projection (11) is started. Flowing raindrops are projected in this case; they move away from the vehicle when it is unlocked and toward it when it is locked.
