General

The pedestrian protection sensor consist of two pressure sensors that are connected with a hose. In the event of a collision, deformation of the hose generates a change in pressure which is detected by the pressure sensors and transmitted to the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit.

Structure

The pedestrian protection sensor is only supplied as a complete package with pressure sensors and hose. The hose must not be detached from the pressure sensors because this could lead to malfunctions.

Inspection following repair work

Any repair work performed on the pedestrian protection sensor or on the bumper must always be followed by a visual inspection. If any damage by external influences (e.g. animal bite marks, pressure marks, etc.) is detected during this inspection, the pedestrian protection sensor is to be replaced.

Inspection following an accident

If the bumper is dismantled because of an accident then the impact absorber must always be assessed.

If the impact absorbers are damaged or defective, they have to be replaced.

In this instance the pedestrian protection sensor must always be replaced too.

If the impact absorbers have not been damaged, the pedestrian protection sensor can be used again following a visual inspection.

Installation

During installation, care must always be taken to ensure that the hose is routed free of any kinks, twists and tension into the impact absorber groove.

Malfunctions will result if routing is incorrect.

Repair

Repair of the hose is not permissible.
