General
The energy management manages the provision (supply) and consumption (budget) of electrical energy. It controls all the measures that assure the mobility of the vehicle and guarantee that all the consumers receive a stable supply of electrical energy according to requirements. The aim is efficient use of energy.
Function
Energy management includes different on-board electrical systems.
12V on-board electrical system
The 12V on-board electrical system supplies the electrical consumers of different systems, such as interior lighting, exterior lighting or engine management, with electrical energy. The main components of the 12V on-board electrical system are the 12V on-board electrical system battery, the alternator (vehicles with 12V alternator) or the DC/ DC converter (vehicles with 48V technology, hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles) and the energy management control system.
Vehicles for highly automated parking or driving also have a secondary 12V on-board electrical system. If the 12V on-board electrical system fails, system-relevant consumers are further supplied via the secondary 12V on-board electrical system.
24V on-board electrical system (off-road vehicle with on-board electrical system 12 V/24 V)
Depending on the equipment installed, the 24V on-board electrical system supplies various electrical consumers such as, e.g. two-way radio, winch or sockets. The main components of the 24V on-board electrical system are the 24V on-board electrical system battery, the 24V alternator and, depending on the equipment installed, the 24V start box with jump-start socket.
48V on-board electrical system (vehicles with 48V technology)
The 48V on-board electrical system supplies all 48V consumer (consumers with high energy requirement) with electrical energy. It also provides electrical energy for starting the combustion engine with the starter-alternator. The main components of the 48V on-board electrical system are the 48V battery, the DC/DC converter (energy transfer), the powertrain control unit (traction management control) and the starter-alternator.
High-voltage on-board electrical system (hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles)
The high-voltage on-board electrical system makes it possible to operate the electric machine for the electric drive. The high-voltage onboard electrical system provides electrical energy to electrical consumers with high energy demands, e.g. the electrical refrigerant compressor or high-voltage PTC heater. The main components of the high-voltage on-board electrical system are the high-voltage battery, the DC/DC converter (energy transfer), the electric machine, the high-voltage starter-alternator (AMG hybrid vehicles, depending on the equipment installed) and the battery management system control unit (energy management).
