Tape Weights

In order to properly install a tape weight (see Fig 1) the wheel surface must be as clean as possible. It's important to recognize that using certain cleaning solvents and solutions can damage the wheel finish. Always follow the tape weight manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning wheel surfaces. When using tape weights, the position of the weight depends on the type of balance being performed. If the assembly is receiving a dynamic (dual plane) balance, the best practice is to position the tape weights as close to the rim flanges as possible. If the assembly is receiving a static balance (single plane), the position of the tape weight is not as critical. However, regardless of where the tape weight is positioned, technicians must ensure that it will not interfere with the brake drum or rotor.
