Clip-On Flange Weights
There are several different styles of clip-on flange wheel weights, depending on the size and type of rim/wheel being balanced. If the contour of the clip does not match the contour of the rim flange, the possibility of losing the wheel weight increases. Always use the correct wheel weight for the type or rim or wheel being balanced. (See Fig 1)
It's also important to recognize that when installing clip-on flange wheel weights on aluminum wheels, the best practice is to partially deflate the tire (50 percent of recommended pressure) and apply tire mounting lubricant to the lower sidewall before attaching the weight. Additionally, if the position of the weight must be changed, the best practice is to use a new wheel weight instead of re-using the old weight. Clip-on wheel weight manufacturers recommended that weights should only be installed once. Aluminum wheel manufacturers recommend the use of coated wheel weights to protect the finish from the effects of galvanic corrosion. Aluminum wheels with coatings to prevent rim flange wear will not allow clip-on weights to be installed.
