Recommended Disposal And Handling Practices
There are a number of steps that fleets who use lead balancing weights can take to be environmentally and safety conscious:
- Instruct all employees who handle lead wheel weights to wash their hands before eating or smoking. Studies have shown that trace amounts of lead can be ingested when good personal hygiene practices are not followed.
- Do not re-use old wheel weights and make sure the correct style of wheel weight is being used for the type of rim flange on the assembly being balanced. When the clips are sprung or not matched to the rim flange, they are more likely to fall off.
- Always recycle lead weights with a reputable metal recycler. The lead melting process emits toxic fumes that are easily inhaled by anyone in the immediate vicinity.
