System Requirements

Two safety chains shall be permanently fastened (i.e., bolted, anchored) to the trailer tongue or gooseneck assembly, one on each side. The strength rating of each length of safety chain or its equivalent and its attachments shall be equal to or exceed, in minimum breaking force, the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the trailer. The safety chains should be crossed under the tongue of the trailer. Leave enough slack in the chains so that cornering is not impeded. Do not allow the safety chains to drag on the ground. The tow vehicle must be equipped with the proper attaching points that meets or exceeds the GVWR of the trailer.
