Measures For Preventing Damage To Vehicles Or Components When Performing Electric Welding Work - Ah00.00-N-0005-01A
MODEL ALL
The following measures must be observed prior to the start of welding, to avoid damage to diverse vehicle components:
- Have fire extinguishers at the ready.
- The negative terminal clamp of the battery must be disconnected and the negative terminal covered up.
- On vehicles with airbag, detach the red, 12-pin test connector/connector at the earliest two seconds after disconnecting the battery (risk of inadvertent activation).
- Attach protective shields to prevent flying sparks and radiated heat in endangered areas.
- Do not touch electronics housings or electrical lines with the welding electrode or the welder's ground connection.
- If two parts are welded to one another, connect the negative clamp of the welding equipment to both parts.
- Make direct connection between the electrical welder's ground connection and the part being welded. Ensure that there are no electrically insulating parts between the ground connection and the point being welded.
- Protect or remove any parts that are sensitive to heat such as plastic cables.
- Before welding, be sure to remove routed electrical lines and/or pipelines as well as concealed containers or electronic components from the hazard area.
- The connection points on the part to be welded on the vehicle and the ground terminal on the electric welder must be as bright as possible; for this reason, thoroughly remove paint, corrosion, oil, grease and contamination.
- The ground terminal of the welding equipment must not be attached to the transmission. The welding current can cause arcing at the bearing points inside the transmission. The structural changes that this causes lead to premature failure of the equipment.
