DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize hydraulic system completely before starting any work on it. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally screen off hazardous area if necessary. Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection). Wear protective gloves. AS00.00-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Shift transmission to neutral and release parking brake    
2 Switch off ignition    
3 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100TX
4 Lift vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-1000TX
5 Detach rear complete wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050EW
6.1 Relieve pressure in Active Body Control System (ABC System) of rear axle Model 231.### ## up to 021273
with code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))
NOTES
The area surrounding the separation point should be cleaned thoroughly before the ABC system is opened.
Otherwise minute particles of dirt in the hydraulic components can result in malfunctions and total failure of the ABC system.

6.2 Release pressure in Active Body Control system (ABC system) at rear axle using Star Diagnosis Model 231.### ## as of 021274

7 Slacken off threaded connections of propeller shaft center support bearing on frame floor assembly by 3 or 4 turns   AR41.10-P-0050RK
8 Remove drive shaft (8) from rear axle differential (9) IMPORTANT The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft (8). AR41.10-P-0050RK
9 Detach electrical connection from rear right brake wear sensor (S10/4) on brake caliper    
10 Detach electrical connection of rear right brake wear sensor (S10/4) from brake caliper TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, brake wear sensor to brake caliper *BA42.10-P-1003-12J 
11 Detach rear left rpm sensor (L6/3) and rear right rpm sensor (L6/4) with holder (11)    
12 Detach rear left and right brake caliper from brake caliper support and place to one side   AR42.10-P-0080RK
13 Detach electrical connection from rear left level sensor (B22/7) and rear right level sensor (B22/10)    
14 Remove rear suspension struts from spring control arms INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Fasten bolts and nuts finger- tight first, tighten when in ready-to-drive condition only.
IMPORTANT Perform only those operation steps required to remove the suspension struts.

15 Support rear axle and lash down securely

REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 10 62 00 Support plate   WS26.00-P-3309B
16 Install guard plates for protection of brake disk dust shields   AR42.00-P-0100-01A

17 Remove bolts (5, 6) and remove stop plates (7) INSTALLATION NOTES
The thread in the frame floor assembly may on no account be recut. The bolts (5, 6) must always be replaced with new ones.
Otherwise the threads can get damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Use new bolts (5, 6).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking bolt of front elastomer bearing on rear axle carrier to frame floor assembly

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, stop plate to body *BA35.10-P-1003-01N 
18 Remove bolts (1, 3) and remove stop plates (2) INSTALLATION NOTES
The thread in the frame floor assembly may on no account be recut. The bolts (1, 3) must always be replaced with new ones.
Otherwise the threads can get damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Use new bolts (1, 3).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, stop plate to body
*BA35.10-P-1003-01N 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, stop plate to elastomer bearing for rear axle carrier *BA35.10-P-1010-01N 
19 Remove screws/bolts (10) INSTALLATION NOTES
The thread in the frame floor assembly may on no account be recut. The bolts (10) must always be replaced with new ones.
Otherwise the threads can get damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Use new bolts (10).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking bolt of rear elastomer bearing on rear axle carrier to frame floor assembly

20 Lower and remove rear axle carrier (4)    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 03 62 00 Lifting platform   WS01.00-P-0091A
21 Install in the reverse order    
22 Tighten bolts and nuts on suspension strut to spring control arm TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, suspension strut for rear axle to spring control arm *BA32.25-P-1004-04N 
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize hydraulic system completely before starting any work on it. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
