	Remove

	Disassemble
2	Clamp tensioning device (10) in vise and insert clamping plates (8, 9)	Tensioning device	Fig 3

3	Insert suspension strut into tensioning device (10)	When positioning the suspension strut, attempt to get the maximum possible number of spring coils (7) in the spring clamp.
4	Clamp spring (7) until the upper spring retainer (3) is relieved of load
5	Remove cap (1)
6	Unscrew nut (2); while doing this, counterhold piston rod	Socket wrench	Fig 2
7	Remove shock absorber (11)
8	Remove bellows (6) and stop damper (5)
9	Release tensioning device (10) and remove spring (7) with upper spring cup (3) and spring seat (4)
	Check

11	Check boot (6), stop damper (5) and spring seat (4) for wear, damage and oil fouling, replace if necessary
	Assemble
12	Clamp spring (7) with tensioning device (10)
13	Position spring (7) on shock absorber (11)
14	Position boot (6), stop damper (5), spring seat (4) and upper spring cup (3) at shock absorber (11) and spring (7)
15	Adjust total thickness of shims	When replacing spring (7). Model 164.1 except code 489 (AIRMATIC Dual Control/semi-active air suspension)	AR32.20-P-0200GZ

		Shims are located between the upper spring cup (3) and the spring seat (4).
16	Fit nut (2) in place
17	Align upper spring cup (3) before tightening the nut (2)	Observe the uneven gap between threaded pins. The two threaded pins closest to each other must point in the direction of travel

20	Loosen spring (7) until tensioning device (10) is relieved of load
21	Remove suspension strut from tensioning device (10)
22	Remove clamping plates (8, 9) from tensioning device (10)
23	Loosen vise and remove tensioning device (10)
	Install
