Use Of Engine No. When Installing Reconditioned Engines And Factory-New Replacement Engines Or Crankcases - AH01.10-P-0001-01A

ENGINE ALL (4xWD, CAR, smart)

In individual countries around the world, the engine number has different legal meanings. Since the middle of 1972, for example, it is regarded by the legislator in the Federal Republic of Germany to be "irrelevant in traffic terms" and therefore it is no longer included in the vehicle documents.

Many other countries around the world still require the engine number to be stated in the vehicle documents for vehicles registered in such countries. In international transport the authorities regard the regulations of the country in which the vehicle is registered to be binding. To ensure that difficulties do not arise when vehicles are checked or when borders are crossed because of missing or incorrect engine numbers, country-specific laws and regulations must be observed when performing repair work.

To ensure that the engine can be identified for vehicle checks (e.g. through technical inspection stations (TUV), police authorities or for an export control by customs authorities), the following guidelines must be observed for installation of remanufactured engines and crankcases:

Installation of identical model of new/remanufactured engines

After an engine replacement, the engine number of the installed remanufactured engine has to be entered into the vehicle data card in VeDoc as well as in the customer repair card by the workshop performing the repair. These documents must clearly state which engine was in the vehicle and which remanufactured engine was installed .

For genuine Mercedes-Benz reconditioned assemblies, the reconditioned assembly label may not be removed from the engine to be installed.

Crankcases and shortblocks

The crankcase and shortblocks available for delivery on the replacement parts sector do not bear an engine model designation marking nor do they have an engine number.

The original engine number must be stamped into the engine sequence field on the crankcase by the workshop performing the repair and be documented and archived by a photo of the old and new engine number .

Please contact the local regional authorities in the event of any queries pertaining to the engine number requirement and the statutory specifications and regulations.
