Overview of indicator and warning lamps in instrument cluster
Instrument cluster, general
The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle. In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
The following displays are incorporated in the instrument cluster in order to be able to convey information to the driver:
- Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, rotational speed, tank contents)
- Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
- Warning lamps (red) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
- Multifunction display (e.g. outside temperature indicator, travel distance display)

Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
The background illumination of the multifunction display in the instrument cluster is activated by waking up the interior CAN, e. g., by:
- Unlocking vehicle using radio or infrared
- Opening or closing driver door
- Change of circuit 15C status
At "bus idle" the instrument cluster remains active for t = 40 s. If a fault exists, this time is extended to t = 120 s.
The following events activate the background illumination of the multifunction display and the scale illumination of the instrument cluster:
- Standing lights ON (circuit 58) (except model 166.064/074/075/874 and except 292.374/375)
- Circuit 15R ON
After switching off circuit 15R the instrument cluster remains active for t = 40 s. If a fault exists, this time is extended to t = 120 s.
Additional function requirements for indicator lamp test
- Circuit 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN and chassis CAN 2 to the instrument cluster.
Function sequence for indicator lamp test
The indicator lamp test serves the function test of certain warning lamps and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster carries out this test automatically each time circuit 15 is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:
- Fuel reserve indicator lamp
- Seat belt warning lamp
- Supplemental restraint system indicator lamp
- Preglow indicator lamp (on diesel engine)
- Antilock brake system indicator lamp
- ESP®/ASR OFF indicator lamp
- Electronic Stability Program warning lamp
- Brake system warning lamp
- Regenerative braking system indicator lamp (with CODE ME05 (HYBRID DRIVE 80KW VARIANT (INCLUDING PLUG-IN)))
- Coolant temperature warning lamp
- Engine diagnosis indicator lamp
- DISTRONIC warning lamp (with code 258 (COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST) or with code 266 (DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist and Stop & Go Pilot) or with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (with code 475 (Tire pressure monitor))
- Brake force distribution warning lamp
The indicator lamp test is terminated when the engine is started.
The function of the following indicator lamps is not checked:
- Left turn signal indicator light
- Right turn signal indicator light
- High beam indicator lamp
- Rear fog lamp indicator lamp
- Front fog lamps indicator lamp
- Standing lamps indicator lamp
- Low beam indicator lamp
