Remove/Install Air Spring - AR32.22-P-1500LWX

Model 253.388/389/988/989 with code 489 (AIR BODY CONTROL)

Shown on left side of vehicle 

  Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
WARNING Risk of injury.  Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove rear wheel   AR40.10-P-1102A
2 Relieve pressure from air spring (4) using vehicle diagnosis system    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
3 Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmission range (at least 2 m)    
4 Release fender liner at rear in area of electrical connectors (1) and push to one side   AR88.10-P-1400LW
5 Separate electrical connections (1)    
6 Unhook electric lines (2) from holder and place to one side    
7 Remove pressure line (5) from air spring (4) and seal openings with suitable stop plugs SPECIAL TOOL Torque tool set Fig 4

8 Remove cover under the spring link (6)    
9 Unhook electrical line (8) from holder (9)    
10 Disconnect electrical connector (3)    
11 Carefully pull air spring (4) downwards by its upper plastic frame until the air spring (4) releases from the retaining clip NOTES Do not completely compress or extend the air spring (4).
Otherwise the air spring (4) may be damaged.
IMPORTANT The retaining clip is destroyed when the air spring (4) is removed.
 
12 Remove air spring (4) downwards NOTES Remove the air spring (4) carefully.
Otherwise the protective boot of the air spring (4) will be damaged.
 
13 Remove retaining clip   AR32.22-P-1500-02EW 
INSPECT Check     
14 Check condition of air spring (4) NOTES There must not be any intrusions on the protective boot.
Otherwise the movement of the spring will damage the spring bellows on the inside.
If a problem arises

Replace air spring (4).
 
INSTALLING Install     
15 Install new retaining clip   AR32.22-P-1500-02EW 
16 Position the air spring (4) with the air spring centering (arrow) onto the spring link (6) NOTES Do not completely compress or extend the air spring (4).
Otherwise the air spring (4) may be damaged.
 
17 Position air spring (4) on retaining clip and latch into place NOTES Do not completely compress or extend the air spring (4).
Otherwise the air spring (4) may be damaged.
 
18 Connect electrical connection (3)    
19 Hook electrical line (8) into holder (9)    
20 Remove all stop plugs    
21 Mount pressure line (5) to air spring (4) NOTES The thread on the connection for the pressure line (5) may not be damaged.
Otherwise, leaks will occur.
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Pressure line to rear air suspension/valve unit *BA32.22-P-1005-03G 
    SPECIAL TOOL Fig 4
    SPECIAL TOOL Torque wrench
If the thread is damaged

Repair connection for pressure line (5).

22 Install cover under the spring link (6)    
23 Hook electric lines (2) into holder    
24 Connect electrical connections (1)    
25 Install fender liner at rear   AR88.10-P-1400LW
26 Install rear wheel   AR40.10-P-1102A
27 Build up pressure in air spring (4) using vehicle diagnosis system    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
    NOTES Build up pressure in air spring (4) as specified. Otherwise, the air spring (4) may suffer initial damage and malfunction at a later stage.  
28 Check AIRMATIC for leaks   AR32.22-P-8100LW
