The following work procedure is shown on a left-hand drive vehicle, on right-hand drive vehicles installation is identical but mirror inverted.
Connection scheme
Routing diagram
- Attach black, 24-pin connector (20.1) of the trailer hitch wiring harness (20) to the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).
The black, 24-pin connector (20.1) was routed into the vehicle interior compartment during installation of the trailer hitch cross member.
- Connect white, 6-pin connector for the trailer hitch wiring harness (20) to the white, 6-pin connector for the control unit wiring harness (22).
This makes the electrical connection for the vehicle interior/trailer hitch (X58/33).
- Use retaining clip to fasten electrical connection for vehicle interior/trailer hitch (X58/33) onto rear center section.
- Connect black, 6-pin connector (22.2) to trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).
- Connect black, 10-pin connector (22.3) to trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).
- Connect white, 10-pin connector (22.4) to the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).
- Route control unit wiring harness (22) along the existing lines to the right rear wheel well and fasten with cable ties.
- Fit brown fuse holder (22.1) onto rear fuse and relay module (K40/5) and check fuse assignment.
Fuse assignment:
Contact cavity 1 = 25 A
Contact cavity 2 = 15 A
Contact cavity 3 = 25 A
Contact cavity 4 = 30 A
Contact cavity 5 = 15 A
The brown fuse holder contact cavities (22.1) are labeled.
- Route white, 4-pin connector (22.5) to rear SAM control unit (N10/8) and connect.
- Route black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE) to the D-pillar.
Do not fasten black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE) in place.
- Route brown/white line (BN/WH) to right rear wheel arch ground point (W3/8) and connect
.
- Unfasten cable duct (23).
- Route black, 6-pin connector (22.6), through cable duct (23) to cutout in liftgate.
Do not fasten black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE) in place.
- Route brown line (BN) to right liftgate ground connection (W32/6).
- Cut off excess length of brown line (BN) and fit a commercially available round cable lug.
- Connect brown line (BN) to right liftgate ground connection (W32/6)
.
- Wrap felt tape around brown line (BN), black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE) starting at the black, 6-pin connector (22.6) along a length of 400 mm (area A).
The brown line (BN), black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE) are routed inside the liftgate (area A).
- Fix brown line (BN), black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and the brown/yellow line (BN/YE) in place using cable ties, starting at the black, 6-pin connector (22.6).
The black, 6-pin connector (22.6) must protrude far enough to ensure that at a later stage the trunk lid/liftgate fully-electric trailer hitch switch can be connected.
- Fasten cable duct (23).
- Use cable ties and felt tape to fasten black, line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE) in D-pillar area and under the headliner.
- Cut off excess lines lengths for black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE).
Shorten the black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE) only far enough for them to be accordingly routed and fixed in place.
- Connect black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE) using potential distributors (25) to match colors.
The potential distributors (25) are included in the
basic wiring harness repair kit or the
supplementary passenger car wiring harness repair kit.
- Wrap felt tape (24) around potential distributor (25).
- Route black line (BK), red/black line (RD/BK), red/blue line (RD/BU) and brown/yellow line (BN/YE) and fix in place using cable ties to vehicle wiring harness together with the wrapped-up potential distributors (arrow).
