Vehicles with dull clear varnish exhibit a significantly reduced degree of luster. The regal-looking matt effect is created by flatting agents in the clearcoat. The flatting agent in the clear varnish produces an uneven surface, thereby causing - in contrast to bright clear varnishes - diffuse light reflections, which result in the "matt effect". MAGNO paints can only be ordered through the designo individualization offer. SHAPE paints are also matt paints, which - in contrast to MAGNO paints - are available as series colors.
Observe special procedures for repair, care and cleaning!
Paint repair
Together with the Mercedes-Benz paint partners (SI98.00-P-0002A ), repair solutions have been developed for all matt paint systems. The repair procedure corresponds to a conventional paint finish with the exception of the clear varnish system that is to be used.
Before preparing the order, the additional work, such as removal of engine hoods, tank filler recess or doors, must be taken into consideration and coordinated with the customer.
Paint repair
In the case of a repair, both the color and the luster of the vehicle must be determined. For this reason, a sample panel with base coat and matt clearcoat must be created before repair. It may be necessary. to produce several sample panels until the color and luster match the vehicle involved.
The luster can also be measured using a reflectometer. A matt finish contains 23 (±7) luster units when measured at a 60° angle.
When creating the sample panel, all application parameters must be selected so that they are the same as those used later on during painting. Different application parameters during creation of the sample panel and subsequent painting may have a negative impact on the cohesion of the color, luster, etc.
Painting the part "edge to edge" is recommended. Where this is not possible, we recommend an extensive repair of the entirety of the damaged side of the vehicle. Spot repair and a touch-up job of the part is not recommended.
A film on refinishing matt paint, "AR refinishing: Matt special paint", can be called up using SD-Media under the "Frame/body/painting" category. The film presents special considerations for matt paint refinishing.
Final operations
Ensure absolute cleanliness when refinishing matt paints because dirt inclusions and paint faults cannot be removed by polishing like they are in conventional systems. Any dirt inclusions must be removed before the last spray application of clear-coat.
No special working units have been created for matt paintwork because the repair procedure is the same as normal, apart from the special considerations listed above.
Additional work as per the specifications of the zone classification in the paint brochure (https://xentry.daimler.com), e.g. removal of dust inclusions, must also be invoiced under operation item 98 9545 Additional work for special paintwork during painting .
A maximum of one paint repair as per paint stage 2 is specified here.
During repair, the specifications of the repair paint manufacturer must be observed at all times. These specifications are described in the After-Sales Portal https://xentry.daimler.com under the "Paint Technology" category.
Detailed documentation is a requirement for warranty and goodwill claims.
When establishing the costs involved, the incalculable additional work must be coordinated in advance with the client.
Training
The paint manufacturers in combination with Global Training offer theoretical and practical training courses on the topic of matt paint.

Care and cleaning
Maintenance
Matt paint requires special care to retain the matt surface. Always avoid using paint cleaners, grinding and polishing products, and gloss preserver (wax) on matt paint.
A vehicle with a matt finish must never be polished.
This results in severe damage to the matt surface in the form of high-gloss, checkered areas. If polishing is performed, the matt effect can only be restored by painting again.
Excessive rubbing with unsuitable products can cause the matt effect to brighten.
After any rubbing with unsuitable products the matt effect can only be restored by renewed painting.
Cleaning
The following rules must be observed for proper care of matt clearcoats:
- Use a soft sponge, neutral soap and a lot of water when cleaning manually. Avoid washing under direct sunlight.
- Frequent use of washing facilities can increase the level of gloss thereby reducing the matt effect.
- Immediately remove any adhering insects or birdlime. We recommend soaking in water. If there are stubborn insect residues on the paintwork, prior spraying with insect remover is recommended.
- Immediately remove resinous, greasy and oily substances, as well as fuel and wax, from the paint surface using a cloth soaked in commercially available benzine. When doing so, proceed carefully and do not exert too much pressure on the paint surface.
- Carefully remove tar splashes and tar spots with a cloth soaked in commercially available benzine and do so without exerting too much pressure (do not use tar remover).
- Avoid sticking adhesive labels, films, magnetic signs or similar items to the paint surface because the adhesive residue can damage the paint.
- An approved metal dust remover can be used to remove metal/industrial dust. Apply metal dust remover onto thoroughly cleaned surface and then thoroughly clean with clear water. Do not use metal dust remover several times.
Matt finish care set
A matt finish care set is available for the care and cleaning of matt surfaces, which has been specifically checked in terms of material compatibility. The matt finish care set consists of a quick cleaner, long-term sealer, shampoo and an intensive cleaner. Please follow instructions on product use.
