Remove/Install Rear Muffler - AR49.10-P-4952MFC

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
WARNING Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
WARNING Risk of burn injuries  , suffocation and poisoning when working on the exhaust system and the components connected to it. Risk of suffocation and risk of poisoning caused by inhalation of gaseous and solid components of the exhaust. Risk of poisoning  caused by skin contact with solid components of the exhaust. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. Use the extraction system. Move people out of the danger zone. AS49.00-Z-0001-01A 
CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Deburr repair panels.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Lift vehicle with vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-1006A
2.1 Release clamp at separating point (x1). If a clamp is already present.  
2.2 Perform repair cut at separating point (x1) of exhaust system. If no clamp is present.
IMPORTANT Perform repair cut at center marking of the three markings.
IMPORTANTCommercially available devices/tools 
Chain pipe cutter
 
3 Remove nut (3). Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, elastomer bearing to rear reinforcement

4 Remove screws (4) and remove strut (5). Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
 
5 Remove screws (6) and remove strut (7). Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
 
6 Support rear muffler (1).    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 23 62 00 Mounting plate   WS26.00-P-0415B
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 24 62 00 Major assembly mount   WS01.00-P-0253B
7 Unhook rear muffler (1) from the elastomer bearings of the brackets (2).    
8 Release and disconnect electrical connector at exhaust gas flap controller (M16/57).    
9 Secure rear exhaust system against falling down, slightly lower rear muffler (1) and remove.

REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 24 62 00 Major assembly mount IMPORTANT Aid of helper required. WS01.00-P-0253B
INSTALLING Install     
10 Remove combustion and corrosion residues at separating point (x1).    
11 Check elastomer bearings of rear exhaust system for damage, replace if necessary.    
12 Attach clamp for separating point (x1). IMPORTANT Replace clamp.  
13 Secure rear exhaust system against falling down and lift under rear muffler (1) to installation position.

REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 24 62 00 Major assembly mount IMPORTANT Aid of helper required. WS01.00-P-0253B
14 Hook rear muffler (1) into the elastomer bearings of the brackets (2).    
15 Slightly tighten clamp at separating point (x1) by hand.    
16 Align exhaust system so that free of tension. IMPORTANT Check for alignment of clamp at separating point (x1).  
17 Tighten clamp at separating point (x1). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Clamp, rear exhaust system to center exhaust system *BA49.10-P-1008-02Q 
18 Connect electrical connector to the exhaust gas flap controller (M16/57) and lock.    
19 Insert strut (5) and tighten screws (4). Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, center cross strut (rear) to frame floor assembly

20 Install strut (7) and tighten bolts (6). Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, center cross strut (front) to frame floor assembly

21 Tighten nut (3). Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, elastomer bearing to rear reinforcement

INSPECT Check     
22 Check installation position and unobstructed movement of exhaust system and correct if necessary.    
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
23 Perform engine test run to check exhaust system for leaks.
