Overview

This document contains information on:

General

Passive safety describes all measures that reduce or avoid the risk of injury in the event of an accident. Restraint systems include all systems that reduce the movement of the vehicle occupants in the event of an impact, e.g. seat belts or airbags.

Function

Preventive occupant protection system

If a potential accident situation is detected, the preventive occupant protection system, initiates reversible measures for preventive occupant protection. To do so, it uses options provided by systems already available in the vehicle (e.g. power windows).

Pedestrian protection

Pedestrian protection can reduce the severity of injury in the event of a pedestrian impact with the vehicle.

The following measures reduce the loads that act on a pedestrian in the event of a collision:

Supplemental restraint system (SRS)

The SRS ensures optimum occupant protection in the event of an accident.

This protection is in particular achieved through the interaction of the body, seat belt and sensor system. The airbags supplement the protective effect of the seat belts and can be triggered depending on the situation.

Seat belt feeders in rear passenger compartment (additional special equipment on model 223 with luxury individual rear seats)

The luxury individual rear seats are equipped with seat belt feeders in order to positively influence the seat belt behavior of rear occupants. The seat belt feeders also increase comfort and improve the accessibility of the rear seat belts.
