4MATIC transfer case, general
The transfer case is integrated in the rear section of the automatic transmission. What makes it so special is its single-stage output with integrated universal joint (6). The single-stage version, in contrast to the dual-stage output of previous transfer cases, no longer requires a spur gear set including the bearing. This has a positive effect on efficiency, weight and the noise characteristics of the drivetrain.
In case of repair, certain components (e.g. the transfer case) can be replaced separately. It is not essential to replace the complete transfer case together with the automatic transmission.
