Engine Sound Control Unit, Component Description - GF54.21-P-0019RDM
Model 172.4
with code B63 (Vehicle sound iESS)
Illustration shows model 172.4 as of 01.03.2016
Location
The engine sound control unit is located behind the paneling in the front passenger footwell (left-hand drive vehicle).
Tasks
The engine sound control unit simulates engine noise in the vehicle interior through the speaker system, to give the impression of a larger-displacement engine.
The engine sound control unit receives the following signals:
- Control signals (e.g. engine speed, engine load and vehicle speed) via drive train CAN (CAN C) from ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10)
- Analog signals via direct line from radio (A2) or from the COMMAND controller unit (A40/3) (except code 810 (Sound system))
The engine sound control unit transmits the following signals in vehicles except code 810 (Sound system):
- Synthesized sound signals over direct lines to:
- Left door speaker (h4/1)
- Right door speaker (h4/2)
- Left rear speaker (h4/7)
- Right rear speaker (h4/8)
- Left door tweeter (h4/33)
- Right door tweeter (h4/34)
The engine sound control unit transmits the following signals in vehicles with code 810 (Sound system):
- Synthesized sound signals over 4 symmetric lines to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3)
The synthesized sound signals are distributed to the individual speakers by the software of the sound system amplifier control unit.
