Acute hazard: A1 smoke
- Visually inspect lithium-ion battery and its surroundings for smoke.
Smoke is often an early indication of fire.
If smoke develops,

Immediately make an emergency call under the respective location-specific and country-specific emergency call number and do not touch the high-voltage battery; vacate the danger zone.
Acute hazard: A2 fire
- Check the lithium-ion battery by means of a visual check of the sources of fire (tarnishing, charred detachable parts).
If the lithium-ion battery is burning,

Immediately make an emergency call under the respective location-specific and country-specific emergency call number and do not touch the high-voltage battery; vacate the danger zone.
Acute hazard: A3 heat development
- Check the lithium-ion battery by means of a visual check of an inner heat development or following a fire (tarnishing, charred detachable parts).
If tarnishing or charred detachable parts can be found on the lithium-ion battery,

It is to be assumed that there is considerable damage to the inside of the lithium-ion battery and an emergency call must immediately be made under the respective location-specific and country-specific emergency call number; the high-voltage battery must not be touched and the danger zone must be vacated.
- Measure the surface temperature of the lithium-ion battery several times within 10 min.

Laser temperature measuring instrument or infrared thermometer
If the housing temperature is more than 10°C above the ambient temperature for a duration of at least 10 min or if the lithium-ion battery exhibits a temperature increase of more than 2°C/min (average) over a period of 10 min,

It is to be assumed that there is considerable damage to the inside of the lithium-ion battery and an emergency call must immediately be made under the respective location-specific and country-specific emergency call number; the high-voltage battery must not be touched and the danger zone must be vacated.
Acute hazard: A4 electrolyte leakage (visible/smellable)
- Check lithium-ion battery for pungent odor caused by leaking electrolyte.
Avoid direct skin contact with electrolyte that may have leaked.
Electrolyte is volatile and has a pungent odor.
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) or location/country-specific protective clothing when working with electrolyte.
If a pungent odor is noticeable. Personal protective equipment for working with electrolyte consists of the following parts:
Protective gloves (standard EN 60903.2012 class 0 (designation A (acid), A+H (acid + oil), or R (acid + oil + ozone))). Tightly fitting safety glasses, goggles, or face protection shield.
Long-sleeved protective clothing.
Respiratory protection - depending on the amount of electrolyte released and the intensity of the release.
- Inspect housing and degassing system of lithium-ion batteries for signs of electrolyte leakage.
Avoid direct skin contact with electrolyte that may have leaked.
Electrolyte may have different colors depending on the reaction (from light/clear to dark/opaque). If the cell only has mechanical damage, the electrolyte is clear.
If there is an electrolyte leakage.
↓
Evacuate danger zone and keep a safe distance.
Ensure that working area is well ventilated.
Wait for possible reaction of electrolyte (at least 20 min). Bind escaped electrolyte with an absorber (vermiculite) and transfer to containers designated for disposal. Clean component parts with shop towel and transfer shop towels to containers designated for disposal.
If the prerequisites for removal are not met in the event of electrolyte leakage, make an emergency call to the respective location-specific and country-specific emergency call number immediately; do not touch high-voltage battery and vacate danger zone.
