Notes On Use, Material Properties And Handling Of Adblue® - AH14.40-P-0001-01KOA

AdBlue® is the trade name for the diesel engine NOx reducing agent AUS32 with the standardized designation DIN 70070.

Tasks of AdBlue® 

AdBlue® serves to reduce poisonous nitrogen oxide to water vapor and elementary nitrogen in the exhaust gas of diesel-powered vehicles with BlueTec technology.

Chemical characterization and composition of AdBlue® 

AdBlue® consists of technically pure urea, without addition of any foreign matter, dissolved in deionized water. The urea content is 32.5 %. AdBlue® is not an additive but is carried separately in an additional container for vehicles with BlueTec technology.

Marking 

Gasoline pumps for delivering AdBlue® are marked with the standard designation DIN 70070 or with the trade name AdBlue®.

Physical and chemical properties of AdBlue® 

Form: liquid

Color: Colorless, clear, light-yellow

Odor: Slight ammonia odor

pH value: 10 (aqueous solution, 10%)

Start of crystallization: -11 °C

Boiling point/boiling range: 103 °C

Flash point: -

Auto-ignition temperature: Not spontaneously inflammable

Density: Approx. 1.09 g/cm3 at 20 °C

Viscosity, dynamic: Approx. 1.4 mPas at 25 °C

Handling operating fluids, fuels and lubricants contaminated with AdBlue® 

It is essential that AdBlue® be kept separate from other operating fluids, fuels and lubricants such as coolant, engine oil, transmission oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid and brake fluid and not used in the same containers and collection bowls. For example, it only takes the smallest amount of AdBlue® in the coolant circuit to damage thermostats and temperature sensors.

Operating fluids which contain traces of AdBlue® must not be used again.

Handling AdBlue® contaminated by foreign matter  Individual components of the BlueTec SCR system react very sensitively with even the smallest traces of contaminants in AdBlue®. When handling AdBlue® it is important, therefore, to always use clean containers and collecting bowls which are only reserved for this purpose. AdBlue® which contains traces of contaminants must not be used again.

Protection of electric and electronic components when handling AdBlue® 

AdBlue® leads to corrosion on electric and electronic components. Therefore when performing work in which AdBlue® can involved, electric and electronic vehicle components in the vicinity should be covered in order to avoid contact with AdBlue®.

Storage and packaging 

In order to avoid crystallization in AdBlue®, storage under normal conditions (ideally up to 25 °C) is recommended.

To avoid deterioration in quality due to contamination, AdBlue® must only be handled in storage and filling systems intended exclusively for AdBlue®.

Suitable container materials are alloyed steel, aluminum, different plastics and plastic coatings in metal containers.

One should not use unalloyed steel, copper, copper-containing alloys and zinc-dipped steel.

Service life and durability 

AdBlue® disintegrates during storage into ammonia hydroxide and carbon dioxide and then no longer fulfills the requirements of the standard DIN 70070.

If the recommended storage temperature of a maximum of 25 °C is maintained then the AdBlue® will fulfill the requirements of this standard for at least 6 months after manufacture. If this recommended storage temperature is exceeded then this period is reduced.

At temperatures under -11 °C the AdBlue® freezes and becomes solid. On warming up again the frozen AdBlue® becomes liquid again and can be reused without any loss of quality.

The maximum permissible service life of AdBlue® can be taken from the MB Specifications for Operating Fluids.

Disposal and degradability 

There is very little risk to water and the ground from AdBlue®. It can be metabolized by microbes and is therefore easily degradable. This is why AdBlue® in Germany is graded in the lowest water contamination class WGK 1.

Disposal of small amounts: 

Small amounts of spilled AdBlue® can be flushed away with much water into the sewage system without problems due to its good biodegradability.

Disposal of large amounts: 

Larger quantities of AdBlue® must be disposed of properly according to the waste utilization/disposal provisions. Grading of wastes should take place on the basis of their origin according to the directive about the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) or the German Abfallverzeichnis-Verordnung (AAV).

Contaminated packaging: 

Packaging which contain residues of AdBlue® is to be handled like the substance itself. Packaging should emptied as well as possible; they can then be passed on for recycling after receiving appropriate cleaning.
