Location
The reversible emergency tensioning retractors are located in the respective B-pillar.
Task
The task of the reversible emergency tensioning retractors is to tension the seat belt in certain hazard situations through actuation of the integrated actuator motors in order to thereby hold the driver or front passenger in position in the seats. This can reduce the consequences of a possible accident. If the seat belt adjustment function is active, the seat belt slack is additionally reduced when the seat belt is fastened. The tasks are subdivided as follows:
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Actuation of components
- Transmitting signals
Reading in of signals
The following signals are read in via chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) among other things:
- Status of driver seat belt buckle restraint system switch (S68/3)
- Status of front passenger seat belt buckle restraint system switch (S68/4)
- Crash signal
- PRE-SAFE® status
- PRE-SAFE® stage
- Status of seat belt adjustment function

Evaluation of input factors
The read-in input factors are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor whereupon the integrated components are actuated and the CAN signals issued.
Actuation of components
The reversible emergency tensioning retractors actuate the integrated actuator motors for tensioning the seat belts directly via internal lines.
Transmitting signals
The reversible emergency tensioning retractors send the request to display fault messages via chassis CAN 1 among other things.
