Location
The reversible emergency tensioning retractors are located in the respective B-pillar.
Task
The reversible emergency tensioning retractors tension the seat belt in certain hazardous situations by actuating the integrated actuator motors. As a result, the driver and the front passenger are held in position in the seats and the consequences of a potential accident are thus reduced. If the seat belt adjustment function is active, the seat belt slack is additionally reduced when the seat belt is fastened.
The tasks are subdivided as follows:

- Evaluation of input factors
- Transmitting signals
Reading in of signals
The reversible emergency tensioning retractors read in the following signals, among others, via the chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1):
- Status of driver seat belt buckle restraint system switch (S68/3)
- Status of front passenger seat belt buckle restraint system switch (S68/4)
- Crash signal
- PRE-SAFE® status
- PRE-SAFE® stage
- Status of seat belt adjustment function

Evaluation of input factors
The read-in input factors are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor whereupon the integrated components are actuated and the CAN signals issued.
Transmitting signals
The reversible emergency tensioning retractors send the request for display of fault messages, among other things, via chassis CAN 1, electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) to the instrument cluster (A1).
