The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 via chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) to the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10).
Passenger-side seat occupied recognition, general
The occupancy of the front passenger seat is recorded by the supplemental restraint system. On vehicles with CODE U18 (Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]) a fitted child seat is also recognized.
The automatic child seat recognition function is only guaranteed to work with a child seat that has been approved and coded by Daimler AG. This child seat must be equipped with two transponders (resonators), which are located at the left and right in its base.
The passenger-side seat occupied recognition function includes the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for seat occupancy recognition
- Function sequence for issuing status and error messages (with CODE U18 Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]))
Function sequence for seat occupancy recognition
Except CODE U18 (Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR) [AKSE]): The front passenger seat occupied recognition is recorded by the front passenger seat occupied recognition (B41/1). Only the status "seat occupied" or "seat not occupied" can be detected. The supplemental restraint system control unit reads in the relevant signals of the front passenger seat seat occupancy recognition.
The occupancy status of the front passenger seat has no influence on the triggering behavior of the supplemental restraint system. The occupancy status is only required for the seat belt reminder warning over the instrument cluster (A1).
With CODE U18 (Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR) [AKSE]): The occupancy of the front passenger seat by a person or a child seat is recorded by the front passenger seat occupied recognition and ACSR [AKSE] (B48).
The following situations are defined:
- Seat not occupied
- Seat occupied (light or heavy person)
- Child seat detected
The supplemental restraint system control unit reads in the corresponding signals of the front passenger seat occupied recognition and ACSR [AKSE] via seat occupancy LIN (LIN E2).
Function sequence for issuing status and error messages (with CODE U18 Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]))
If a child seat is detected, the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (N72/1e1) in the upper control panel (N72/1) is switched on.
The request for switching on the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp is sent by the supplemental restraint system control unit over the chassis CAN 1, electronic ignition lock control unit, interior CAN (CAN B), SAM control unit (N10) and the battery sensor LIN (LIN B15) to the upper control panel control unit, which actuates the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp accordingly.
If the Supplemental Restraint System control unit detects that the front passenger seat is not occupied or occupied by a person, the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp is not switched on. On vehicles as of 02.06.2014 a detected person results in the automatic child seat recognition airbag ON indicator lamp (N72/1e4) being permanently switched on.
Fault messages:
In case of an error (e.g. seat occupied recognition and front passenger seat ACSR defective, child seat positioned incorrectly, connection to supplemental restraint system control unit disrupted), the following indicator lamps are switched on:
- Supplemental restraint system indicator lamp (A1e15) in the instrument cluster
- Automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp
A fault code is also stored in the supplemental restraint system control unit and a correspondent message is shown on the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster. The request to display a corresponding message is sent by the supplemental restraint system control unit via chassis CAN 1, electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) to the instrument cluster.
