Remove/Install Battery - AR54.10-P-0005GZ

  Risk of explosion  from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury  through burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fires, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses.
Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

  Risk of injury  caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte or due to short circuit. Risk of burn  injuries due to thermal changes. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing battery electrolyte. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses. REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Move head restraint on front passenger seat (1) all the way down NOTES
Head restraint must be moved down to end stop.
Otherwise the sun visor can be damaged when tilting the backrest forward.
 
2 Move front passenger seat (1) as far forward as possible and upwards, tilt seat backrest forward    
3 Remove cover (2)    
4 Separate floor covering (3) at both marked positions (arrows) If the floor covering (3) was not separated already.  
5 Move front passenger seat (1) all the way to rear Model 164, 166  
6 Fold floor covering (3) forward IMPORTANT Make sure that the folded-over floor covering (3) does not tear at the fold.  
7 Move front passenger seat (1) far enough forward until the battery compartment is fully accessible Model 164, 166  
8 Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmission range (min. 2 m)    
9 Remove expansion rivet (5) and remove air vent (4)    
10 Remove battery cover (12)    
11 Ensure that no jumper start device is connected to vehicle    
12 Loosen nut on battery negative pole terminal (8) and disconnect ground line of battery (13) NOTES All consumers must be switched off. Otherwise the electrical system can be damaged. AR54.10-P-0003GZ 
13 Remove positive battery terminal cover (6), undo nut on clamping device for positive battery terminal (7) and remove positive line TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, battery line to negative terminal/positive terminal *BA54.10-P-1012-01C 
14 Detach vent hose (11) including plastic fitting from battery (13) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Vent hose (11) must be routed free of kinks.  
15 Unscrew nuts (10) and remove retaining plate (9) Model 164, 292
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, battery retaining plate to frame floor assembly

16 Remove battery (13) INSTALLATION NOTES
Before the battery (13) is installed, it must be ensured that there are no cables in the battery support area.
Otherwise they can be damaged when the battery (13) is installed.
IMPORTANT Make sure that the maxi-fuses in the prefuse box in the battery compartment are not loosened inadvertently when the battery (13) is installed and removed.
 
17 Install in the reverse order    
  Initial startup     
18 Confirm battery change in SAM control unit (N10) in the Actuations menu item Model 166, 292
as of model year 2016
When replacing the battery (13).
