Note On Acute Hazards Caused By On-Board Electrical System Batteries For 48 V On-Board Electrical System - AH54.10-P-0007-03MEV
Model 167, 205, 213, 222, 238, 253, 257, 290
with code B01 (48V technology)
A1: Smoke
Smoke is often an early indication of fire. Therefore, in the event of any smoke development, notify the fire department immediately and move to a sufficiently safe distance from the fire.
A2: Fire
If a fire is detected in the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system or the consequences of a fire (tarnishing, scorched detachable parts), notify the fire department immediately. A sufficient safe distance must be adopted.
A3: Heat buildup
Check the housing of the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system for signs of any tarnishing. In suspected instances personal protective equipment must be worn (insulated gloves, face protection).
If discoloration is visible on the on-board electrical system battery housing for the 48 V on-board electrical system that indicates significant heat buildup, one can safely assume that significant damage has occurred to the inside of the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system.
Next to heat tinting on the housing the following criteria are also indicators of heat buildup:
- The housing temperature of the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system is above 65°C and an additional temperature increase of more than 2°C/min (averaged) is determined.
- If for a period of than 10 minutes the housing temperature of the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system is more than 10°C above the ambient temperature.
Suitable temperature measuring instruments are, e.g. commercially available laser temperature measuring instruments or infrared thermometers.
If at least one criterion is met, contact the fire department immediately and move to a sufficiently safe distance from the fire.
A4: Electrolyte leakage (visible/smellable)
Examine the housing of the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system for any signs of electrolyte leakage. Wait for a possible reaction time of the electrolyte of about 20 minutes and any reactions (e.g. smoke development). If no further reactions are visible, place on-board electrical system battery for 48 V on-board electrical system in a secure container and then move to the designated storage area. While doing so avoid any direct contact with potentially leaked electrolyte.
Visual inspection:
Liquid electrolyte has a dark coloration and it leaves dark traces.
Smell test:
Electrolyte is volatile and it can be recognized by its pungent odor. Do not transport the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system with any cracks or unspecified opening without using additional special measures. To store the on-board electrical system battery for 48 V on-board electrical system safely, place it in a leakproof sheet-metal container. This should be half-filled with vermiculite (noncombustible, absorbs leaking electrolyte).
A type-specific container can be ordered from the GLC for the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system. After this, internal transport by trained personnel to a secure location is possible. The container with the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system remains there for the specified period of time (at least 7 days). An internal chemical reaction of the on-board electrical system battery for the 48 V on-board electrical system after this period should no longer be expected.
