Separation of housing halves 

  1. SPECIAL TOOL Prepare assembly tool.

    IMPORTANT While the work is being carried out, it is necessary at various times to lock the SPECIAL TOOL assembly tool to prevent it from turning or to unlock it and align it vertically or horizontally.

  2. Fix hub reduction gear in SPECIAL TOOL assembly tool and secure to prevent it from turning.

    IMPORTANT Aid of helper required.

  3. Remove screws (19) of external housing (13).

    IMPORTANT The screw (19) directly above the wheel hub (36) is not yet removable at this point in time.

  4. Remove screws (18) of inner housing (12).
  5. Remove screw/bolts (16).

    IMPORTANT Remove washers (15) with screws (16).

  6. Detach cap (14).
  7. Unscrew screw/bolt (6).
  8. Make sure that the SPECIAL TOOL assembly tool can be rotated.
  9. Rotate housing so that opening of screw (6) and screw of clamp nut (27) are aligned.
  10. Slacken screw of clamp nut (27) and unscrew clamp nut (27) usingSPECIAL TOOL adapter.
  11. Remove thrust plate (26) and tapered roller bearing (28).

    IMPORTANT The bearing shell of the tapered roller bearing (28) remains in the inner housing (12).

  12. Separate inner housing (12) from external housing (13) using SPECIAL TOOL grub screws and place inner housing (12) on a suitable surface.

    IMPORTANT Aid of helper required.

  13. Remove relay spur gear (24) with tapered roller bearings (23, 25) from external housing (13) and place on a suitable surface.

    NOTES Do not use a prying tool. This causes damage to the sealing surfaces or the cap (14).

    IMPORTANT The bearing shell of tapered roller bearing (23) remains in the external housing (13).

    The bearing shell of tapered roller bearing (25) remains in the inner housing (12).

    Observe alignment of relay spur gear (24).

    Removal of wheel hub (36) 

  14. SPECIAL TOOL Secure assembly tool to prevent it from turning.
  15. Remove outer screw plug (5) on wheel hub (36).

    When disassembling or replacing the wheel hub (36).

  16. Remove retaining ring (29).
  17. Remove gearwheel (33) of wheel hub (36).

    IMPORTANT The gearwheel (33) is plugged onto the shaft of the wheel hub (36).

  18. Remove external housing (13) and place on a suitable mat.

    IMPORTANT Remove screw (19) directly above wheel hub (36).

    Disassembly of wheel hub (36) 

    IMPORTANT The bearing shell (31a) of tapered roller bearing (31) remains on the external housing.

  19. Remove thrust plate (2) from wheel hub (36).
  20. Remove tapered roller bearing (31) using SPECIAL TOOL puller.
  21. Remove thrust plate (30) of tapered roller bearing (31) from wheel hub (36).
  22. Drive wheel studs out of wheel hub (36) using suitable means.

    Removal of drive shaft 

  23. Secure gear wheel (34) of drive shaft to prevent it from turning. SPECIAL TOOL
  24. Remove screw (8) and remove drive shaft.

    Disassembly of external housing (13) 

  25. Remove bearing shell (23a) using SPECIAL TOOL internal extractor and SPECIAL TOOL counter stay, and fasten to associated bearing cage.

    NOTESSPECIAL TOOL Do not rest the counter stay directly on the external housing (13).

    This will result in damage to the housing or the sealing surfaces.

  26. Remove cylindrical roller bearing (22) using SPECIAL TOOL internal extractor and SPECIAL TOOL counter stay.

    NOTESSPECIAL TOOL Do not rest the counter stay directly on the external housing (13).

    This will result in damage to the housing or the sealing surfaces.

    IMPORTANT The new caulking points (9) to be applied to secure the cylindrical roller bearing (22) must be 120° apart when installing. The distance to existing caulking points (9) must be at least 30°.

    If the described minimum distance of the caulking points (9) is less than 30°,

    ↓

    Replace external housing (13).

  27. Remove shaft seal (32) using a suitable tool.

    IMPORTANT Replace shaft seal (32).

  28. Remove bearing shell of tapered roller bearing (31) using suitable means.

    Disassembly of inner housing (12) 

  29. Remove bearing shell (25a) using SPECIAL TOOL internal extractor and SPECIAL TOOL counter stay, and fasten to associated tapered roller bearing.

    NOTESSPECIAL TOOL Do not rest the counter stay directly on the inner housing (12).

    This will result in damage to the housing or the sealing surfaces.

  30. Remove shims (1) from seat of bearing shell (25a).
  31. Remove bearing shell (28a) using SPECIAL TOOL drift.

  32. Remove circlip (4).
  33. Remove gearwheel (34) using SPECIAL TOOL drift.
  34. Remove shaft seal (21) using a suitable tool.

    IMPORTANT Replace shaft seal (21).

  35. Remove circlip (3).
  36. Remove cylindrical roller bearing (20) using SPECIAL TOOL drift.
  37. Detach pulse ring (11) from gearwheel (34) using a suitable tool.

    Disassembly of relay spur gear (24) 

    NOTES Do not rest the SPECIAL TOOL puller directly on the spur gear (24). This will damage the spur gear (24).

  38. Remove bearing shells of the two tapered roller bearings (23, 25) and place to one side.

    IMPORTANT Do not confuse the bearing shells and the tapered roller bearings (23, 25).

  39. Detach tapered roller bearing (23) from spur gear (24) using SPECIAL TOOL puller and assign to associated bearing shell.
  40. Detach tapered roller bearing (25) from spur gear (24) using SPECIAL TOOL puller and assign to associated bearing shell.
