Determine Specified Value Of Installed Dimension And Thickness Of Shim On Drive Pinion - AR35.30-P-0458-02F
MODEL 460
MODEL 461 (except 461. 331)
MODEL 463 (except 463.270/271) up to model year 2013
Measure difference dimension of drive pinion
The following special tools are required during removal:
Dial indicator holder,
Measuring plate,
Ring
- Grind down end face of drive pinion using a whetstone before measuring.
Because the front side of the drive pinions are not refaced when manufactured, they still contain grooves and material buildup (caused by the clamping procedure). In order to avoid measurement errors, these elevated sections of material must be ground before the measurement.
Set dial indicator (3) on
measuring piece (2) with 8 mm preload to zero.
With ring gear dia. 200 mm use lower side, with ring gear dia. 215 mm use higher side.
Remove measuring piece and insert drive pinion with bearing and magnetic disk (5).
- Determine and note down difference dimension C between dimension A (length dimension of measuring piece) and dimension B (length dimension of drive pinion).
Add 0.03 mm to the reading because the drive pinion is pulled this much deeper into the axle housing when installing in the rear axle housing. Pull the drive pinion downwards while turning it during the measuring procedure.
Measure production tolerance of axle housing
- Screw measuring pin (tool scope
for adjustment device) into
dial indicator (3).
- Press the spacer (4) firmly
onto the adjustment device and
set a preload of 2 mm on the dial indicator.
- The
Set dial indicator to zero. By doing so the
adjustment device (1) is then set to the specified basic dimension.
Insert measuring piece (2) into rear axle housing.
Guide adjustment device (1) into rear axle housing and determine highest position (vertical position) of measuring pin by turning back and forth.
- Measure production difference in relation to specified basic dimension.
In the event of a deviation towards the center of the ring gear (
(the dial indicator indicates more than 2 mm), subtract this difference from the difference dimension of the drive pinion. In the event of a deviation towards the drive pinion
(the dial indicator indicates less than 2 mm), add this difference to the difference dimension of the drive pinion. The difference dimension determined in this way corresponds to the thickness of the shim.
Deviation from specified basic dimension
The difference between the specified basic dimension and the basic dimension engraved on the ring gear must be added to or deducted from the dimension difference of the drive pinion.
Example:
Desired basic dimension 66.00 mm
Dimension engraved on the ring gear 66.02 mm
Difference dimension (to be deducted from difference dimension of drive pinion) - 0.02 mm If the dimension engraved on the ring gear is, e.g. 65.96 mm, then 0.04 mm must be added to the dimension.
Examples for calculating thickness of shim Example 1:
Basic dimension 66.00 mm
Dimension engraved on ring gear - 66.02 mm
Deviation from basic dimension - 0.02 mm
Difference dimension C of drive pinion 5.18 mm
Deviation from basic dimension - 0.02 mm
Production deviation of rear axle housing (towards ring gear) - 0.06 mm
Shim to be installed 5.10 mm
Example 2:
Basic dimension 66.00 mm
Dimension engraved on ring gear - 65.96 mm
Deviation from basic dimension + 0.04 mm
Difference dimension C of drive pinion 5.36 mm
Deviation from basic dimension + 0.04 mm
Production deviation of rear axle housing (towards drive pinion) + 0.02 mm
Shim to be installed 5.42 mm
The shims are available in thicknesses from 5.00 mm to 5.68 mm in graduations of 0.02 mm.
