Function requirements, general

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 over chassis CAN 1 to the adaptive damping system control unit. The ME-SFI [ME] control unit sends the "engine running" or "drive train operational" signal over the drive train CAN, powertrain control unit and suspension CAN 1 to the adaptive damping system control unit.

Adaptive damping system (ADS), general

The ADS is a hydraulic adjustable damping system in combination with steel suspension. The damping can be switched between Comfort (soft damping) and Sport (hard damping) using the Comfort/Sport (ADS) button in the lower control panel control unit.

In critical driving situations, the damping is automatically switched to the hard damping stage (Sport) irrespective of the driver's request.

Function sequence for ADS

The SAM control unit reads in the status of the Comfort/Sport (ADS) button via the center console switch LIN and sends it via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 1 to the adaptive damping system control unit.

The adaptive damping system control unit receives the status of the Comfort/Sport (ADS) button and actuates the following components:

The damping stage currently active is indicated by an LED in the Comfort/Sport (ADS) button and in the instrument cluster (damper symbol with the text "Sport" or "Comfort"). The adaptive damping system control unit sends the status of the ADS 1 to the instrument cluster via chassis CAN, and to the lower control panel control unit via chassis CAN1, the electronic ignition lock control unit, interior CAN,

After the ignition is switched on, the soft damping stage (Comfort) is activated; this is indicated by illumination of the LED in the Comfort/Sport (ADS) button. If engine operation is unstable, the damping valve units are not energized and remain in the hard damping stage (Sport). The damping valve units are actuated accordingly as soon as engine operation is stable.

SAM control unit and center console switch LIN. If the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) is activated, the damping is automatically switched to the hard damping stage (Sport) in critical driving situations irrespective of the driver's request (in order to improve driving stability). The hard damping stage (Sport) remains active for as long as the driving situation requires this. The Electronic Stability Program control unit sends the request to switch over the damping stage via chassis CAN 1 to the adaptive damping system control unit, which then implements this.
