Damping Valve Unit, Basic Function - GF32.32-P-2002A

Vehicles with adjustable damping

Overview

This document contains information on:

General

The damping valve units continuously regulate the damping for each wheel depending on which damping characteristic is specified by the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) control unit. This means that damping can be adapted to the driving style and road surface condition.

Function

There are two solenoid valves in every damping valve unit with which continuous damping adjustment can be carried out The damping valve units can be controlled independent of each other for each wheel

The damping valve units are actuated by the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) control unit via a pulse width modulated signal at a frequency of approx. f = 800 Hz. The switching frequency of damping valve units can be up to f = 5 Hz. An open circuit to the individual damping valve units is detected by the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) control unit.

During strong damping, the coil (2) in the housing (1) in the damping valve unit is deenergized and flow to the comfort valve (7) is closed by the flat side valve (8). The entirety of flow volume A (A) must be routed through the main piston (6) and thus generates strong damping.

In the event of weak damping, the coil (2) in the housing (1) in the damping valve unit is energized. As a result, the armature (9) fitted with a spring (10) pulls the flat slide valve (8) upward and determines the flow area through the flow diversion/slide guide (3) depending on the vehicle speed. Flow volume B (B) in the single-tube gas-filled shock absorber (4) can flow through the comfort valve (7) in the piston pin (5) and the main piston (6) of the single-tube gas-filled shock absorber (4).

The damping changes depending on the flow area to the comfort valve (7). If the flow area is fully opened by the flat slide valve (8), the flow volume passes through the main piston (6) and the comfort valve (7). The single-tube gas-filled shock absorbers (4) consequently have the lowest damping.
