Location
The reversible emergency tensioning retractors are located on the sidewall on the left and right sides of the vehicle.
Task
The task of the reversible emergency tensioning retractors is to tension the seat belt in certain hazard situations through actuation of the integrated actuator motors in order to thereby hold the driver or front passenger in position in the seats and in turn reduce the consequences of a possible accident. If the seat belt adjustment function is active, the seat belt slack is additionally reduced when the seat belt is fastened.
The tasks are subdivided as follows:
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Transmitting signals
Reading in of signals
The following signals are read in via chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) among other things:
- Crash signal
- Status of driver belt buckle restraint system switch (S68/3)
- Status of front passenger belt buckle restraint system switch (S68/4)
- Status of seat belt adjustment function
- PRE-SAFE® status
- PRE-SAFE® stage

Evaluation of input factors
The read-in input factors are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor whereupon the integrated components are actuated and the CAN signals issued.
Transmitting signals
The reversible emergency tensioning retractors send requests to display fault messages via the chassis CAN 1, among other things.
