The head unit is located in the center console.

Tasks 

The head unit has the following tasks:

• Central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle 
• Integration of smartphones (as of 01.12.2018) 
• Evaluating and forwarding control signals 
• Reading in of input signals as well as actuation of output media and system components 

Central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle 

The head unit provides the user with a structured and uniform user interface for the following system components:

• Telephony
• Internet (including WLAN hotspot)
• Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
• Navigation (with data from internal hard disk) including extended functions
• Digital operator's manual (interactive)
• Audio (e.g. radio, CD/DVD, Bluetooth® audio, SD card (Secure Digital), Universal Serial Bus (USB))
• Video (in high resolution or frequently used video formats such as MPEG, DIVX, WMV)

The user interface is shown on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).

Using the "Vehicle functions" menu, equipment-dependent contents and functions of additional systems (e.g. climate control, seat adjustments) can be shown and controlled on the Audio/COMAND display.

Integration of smartphones (as of 01.12.2018) 

The head unit enables the integration of smartphones by supporting the following integration standards:

• CarPlay (Apple) (with code 16U (CarPlay smartphone integration))
• Android Auto (Google) (with code 17U (Google Automotive Link smartphone integration))
• CarLife (Baidu) (with code 18U (Baidu CarLife smartphone integration))

In order to be able to use the smartphone apps, the smartphone must be connected to USB connector 2 (A90/5x2) and the integration standard selected via the "Connect" menu. If the "Automatic connection" setting has been selected, activation cannot take place via the menu.

If a smartphone is connected and an integration standard is activated, the head unit is switched to a special operating mode ("Integration mode"), in which not all head unit functions can be used. If an integration standard is activated, the following functions of the head unit are not made available:

• Media player
• Telephony (with CarPlay)

With Android Auto, the following usage restrictions apply for the telephony: Calls can only be made through the connected smartphone. Telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package) is not possible.

During navigation, the initiation of the CarPlay or Android Auto navigation system terminates the head unit navigation system and vice versa.

The voice control for Carplay or Android Auto is initiated by pressing and holding the voice control ON and favorites switch (S163/2s17). If the voice control ON and favorites switch is pressed quickly, the voice control system of the head unit is switched on.

The radio (AM and FM) functions, vehicle settings and safety-relevant functions such as, e.g. emergency call system (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)), can still be used in any case.

If an integration standard is activated, the head unit supports the smartphone apps in the following manner:

• Volume adaptation for all audio signals
• Forwarding of control signals to smartphone
• Use of hands-free system by the smartphone
• Forwarding of audio output to the speaker system
• Mute function, e.g. with smartphone telephony
• Forwarding of position data to smartphone
• Forwarding of video signals generated by the smartphone to the Audio/COMAND display
• Forwarding of status information for displaying in the instrument cluster (A1)

The smartphone applications themselves are not shown in the instrument cluster.

Evaluating and forwarding control signals 

The head unit receives operation signals for the voice control system (VCS) from the driver hands-free system microphone (B25/26) and evaluates them.

The head unit receives operation signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or of the touchpad (A105) (with code 446 (Touchpad only), with code 448 (Touchpad) or with code 531 (COMAND APS)) via the telematics CAN (CAN A) and evaluates them.

As of 01.12.2018, the head unit receives the signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group (S163/2) via the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) and evaluates these.

As of 01.12.2018, the head unit receives the operation signals of the volume adjustment switch and head unit ON switch (N72/5s1) via the telematics CAN and evaluates these.

As of 01.12.2018, the head unit shows the selected drive program on the Audio/COMAND display when the DYNAMIC SELECT switch (N72/4s1) is operated. The head unit receives the control signals via the telematics CAN.

Up to 30.11.2018, the head unit receives the operation signals of the On/Off button with volume adjustment (S67) via the telematics CAN and evaluates them.

Up to 30.11.2018, the head unit receives the operation signals of the ECO start/stop function button (S193/5) via the telematics CAN, evaluates them and sends function-specific CAN messages to the AMG gateway control unit (N93/9) via the user interface CAN.

  Operation signals, with code 446 (Touchpad only) also communication with the Drive Unit control unit, for the operation signals of the volume adjustment and head unit ON switch at the right lower control panel and the operation signals of the DYNAMIC SELECT switch at the left lower control panel

The head unit is a user interface CAN user:

The head unit exchanges data with the following control units via MOST:

• Via the user interface CAN, the head unit sends, for example, navigation displays to the instrument cluster or operation signals and the connection request for the HERMES control unit (N112/9) to the AMG gateway control unit.

CAN up to 30.11.2018 

The head unit is a telematics CAN and user interface CAN subscriber:

• The head unit receives, e.g. the control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel and from the touchpad over the telematics CAN. The signals from the ON/OFF button with volume control are also forwarded over the Audio/COMAND control panel and the telematics CAN to the head unit.
• The head unit sends, e.g. control signals to the Audio/COMAND display over the telematics CAN.
• Via the user interface CAN, the head unit receives, for example, the signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) from the instrument cluster, and from the AMG gateway control unit it receives the rpm signals from the ESP® control unit among other things.
• Via the user interface CAN, the head unit sends, e.g. navigation displays to the instrument cluster or the interpreted signals from the ECO start/stop function button to the AMG gateway control unit.
