The HERMES control unit is installed in the trunk on the right.

Model 190.4: 

The HERMES control unit is installed behind the left front seat.

Tasks 

The HERMES control unit is responsible for the following tasks:

• Self-diagnosis for circuit 15 ON, secures operational readiness of emergency call system by checking the following facts:
  • Reception of cyclic readiness signal from Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit (N2/10)
  • Connection for muting audio sources (mute function)
  • Connection to driver hands-free system microphone (B25/26) via the head unit (A26/17)
  • Connection to GPS antenna (A2/23) (with code 520 (Audio 20 USB) or with code 506 (Audio 20 radio, NTG 5.5))
  • Connection to telephone antenna splitter (A2/109) (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) or to the emergency call system antenna (A2/52)
• Reception of crash signals from the supplemental restraint system control unit (trigger signal for automatic emergency call)
• Set-up of voice or data connections to service provider
• For voice connections:
  • Transmitting of muting signal (mute function) to the following components
    • Midline sound system amplifier control unit (N40/2) (except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System) as of 01.12.2018)
    • Head unit (except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System) up to 30.11.2018)
    • Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code 810 (Sound system))
    • Advanced sound system amplifier control unit (N40/7) (with CODE 811 (Advanced sound system))
  • Reception of microphone signals from the head unit
  • Transmitting of audio signals to the following components:
    • Center instrument panel mid-range speaker (H4/27) (as of 01.12.2018 or with code 810 (Sound-system) up to 30.11.2018 or with code 811 (Advanced Sound System) up to 30.11.2018)
    • Emergency call speaker (H4/48) (except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced Sound System) up to 30.11.2018)
• Reception of GPS signals (Global Navigation System) for position finding (with code 520 (Audio 20 USB) or with code 506 (Audio 20 radio, NTG 5.5))
• Reception of positioning data from head unit for position finding (with code 531 (COMAND APS))
• Forwarding of real-time traffic data from the service provider to the head unit over the integrated radio interface and the WLAN antenna (A2/83) (with code 367 (Live Traffic Information) as of 01.12.2018)
• Forwarding of real-time traffic data from the service provider to the head unit over a USB (Universal Serial Bus) connection (with code 367 (Live Traffic Information) up to 30.11.2018)
• Communication of internet signals to the head unit via the integrated radio interface and the WLAN antenna (as of 01.12.2018 or with code 531 (COMAND APS) and code 494 (USA version) up to 30.11.2018)
• Reading in operation signals from following buttons:
  • SOS button (N70/3s5) (manual emergency call)
  • Breakdown assistance button (N70/3s10) (with code 494 (USA version))
  • MB-Info button (N70/3s11) (with code 494 (USA version))
• Status display through actuation of light-emitting diodes in the overhead control panel electronics (N70/3)
• Sending of a test signal to electronic overhead control panel (emergency call system self-diagnosis)
• Communication over diagnostics CAN (CAN D)

The HERMES control unit receives, e.g. the following signals over the diagnostics CAN:

• Circuit 15 status from electronic ignition lock control unit (N73)
• Readiness signal from Supplemental Restraint System control unit
• Crash information from Supplemental Restraint System control unit (redundant)
• Operation signals from control elements on multifunction steering wheel (e.g.volume control, mute function, set-up or interrupt connection)
• Steering wheel angle from steering column tube module control unit (N80) for position finding (with code 520 (Audio 20 USB) or with code 506 (Audio 20 radio, NTG 5.5))
• Wheel speed signals, yaw rate signals from the ESP control unit (N30/4) for position finding (with code 520 (Audio 20 USB) or with code 506 (Audio 20 radio, NTG 5.5))
• Positioning data from head unit for position finding (with code 531 (COMAND APS))

The HERMES control unit sends, e.g. the following signals over the diagnostics CAN:

• Map data and other data transmitted by the Service Center ("Remote Information Feed") for the head unit (with code 494 (USA version))
• Status signals for the instrument cluster (A1)
• Display messages for display on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) for the head unit

"HERMES" stands for: "Hardware for Enhanced Remote, Mobility & Emergency Services".

The HERMES control unit calculates the vehicle position and if necessary, it sends a message to the service center.

The HERMES control unit is prepared to send and receive for a period of 30 days. As soon as an SMS message is received, the HERMES control unit is activated (Wake-up). After 30 days the emergency call system switches to the "Sleep mode".

Structure 

The HERMES control unit contains the following components:

• Internet-compatible communication module with Bluetooth® interface and radio interface for WLAN
• Position finding module
• GPS receiver for position finding (date, time, history and last known location)
• Memory for vehicle-specific data
• Buffer for map and other data that is transmitted to the vehicle
