Function requirements, general
- No overvoltage or undervoltage (operating voltage range U ≥ 8 ≤ 17.5 V)
- Transport mode not active
- "Engine running" or "drive train operational" signal on
- Low beam ON
- Combination switch (S4) in "High beams" position
Detailed information on the operating state of the transport mode is given in the separate function description "Energy management, function".
Low beam actuation is also active during high beam actuation, and is described in document "Driving lights actuation function".
The CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine) or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (with gasoline engine) sends the "Engine running" or the "Drive train operational" signal via chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1), electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and interior CAN (CAN B) to the SAM control unit (N10).
The position of the combination switch is read in directly by the steering column tube module control unit (N80) which sends it over chassis CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the SAM control unit.
The SAM control unit, as the master control unit for the exterior lights, reads in the function requirements, evaluates them and issues the release for the Adaptive Highbeam Assist function.
Vehicle with CODE 22P (Lane package) :
The SAM control unit sends the enable over the interior CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) to the multifunction camera (A40/11).
Vehicle with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus) : The SAM control unit sends the enable over the interior CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit, chassis CAN 2, the chassis gateway control unit (N93/7) and over the chassis FlexRay (Flex E) to the stereo multifunction camera (A40/13).
The multifunction camera is the master control unit for the Adaptive High Beam Assist.
Function sequence for adaptive high beams
The traffic and environment situation in front of the vehicle is detected by the multifunction camera and accordingly evaluated. Actuating the actuators integrated in the left front lamp unit (E1) and the right front lamp unit (E2) serves to ensure that the road is ideally illuminated without dazzling any of the other road users. The multifunction camera uses the brightness, shape, structure, color, where applicable, and motion of detected objects to differentiate between preceding or oncoming road users, street lighting, signs or other parts of the environment. The picture recognition module integrated into the multifunction camera judges the distance, e.g. to other road users, evaluates the outside brightness level of the vehicle environment and recognizes extreme weather conditions (e.g. thick fog, heavy snowfall) or tunnels.
The multifunction camera evaluates the following information to implement the function, among other things:
- Steering angle
- Vehicle speed
- Yaw behavior
The data from the steering wheel angle sensor (N49) is read in by the steering column tube module control unit directly, and it calculates the steering angle.
Vehicle with CODE 22P (Lane package) :
The steering column tube module control unit sends information on the steering angle over chassis CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 to the multifunction camera.
Vehicle with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus) :
The steering column tube module control unit sends information on the steering angle over chassis CAN 1, the chassis gateway control unit and over the chassis FlexRay to the stereo multifunction camera.
The vehicle speed is calculated on the basis of the wheel speeds.
Vehicle with CODE 22P (Lane package) :
The Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) sends information on the wheel speeds over chassis CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 to the multifunction camera.
Vehicle with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus) :
The Electronic Stability Program control unit sends information on the wheel speeds over the chassis CAN 1, chassis gateway control unit, and over the chassis FlexRay to the stereo multifunction camera.
The yaw behavior of the vehicle is recorded by the acceleration sensor integrated in the Supplemental Restraint System control unit (N2/10). Vehicle with CODE 22P (Lane package) :
The supplemental restraint system control unit sends corresponding information about the vehicle's yaw behavior over chassis CAN 1, the Electronic Stability Program control unit, chassis CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 to the multifunction camera.
Vehicle with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus) :
The supplemental restraint system control unit sends information about the vehicle's yaw behavior over chassis CAN 1, the Electronic Stability Program control unit, chassis CAN 1, the chassis gateway control unit and the chassis FlexRay to the stereo multifunction camera.
A differentiation is made between the following Adaptive High Beam Assist functional states:
- Optical headlamp range adjustment (as of approx. v = 25 km/h)
The headlamp range of the low beam is automatically adapted to the distance to other road users.
- Automatic high beams (as of approx. v = 30 km/h)
The high beams are activated if no other road user is detected.
- Partial high beam (as of approx. v = 45 km/h) (with CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp)
The partial high beam places road users in the low beam section of the light cone thereby omitting them from the high beam.
The partial high beams are not activated if a vehicle is detected in front that is less than a defined minimum distance away at the time of activation. The switch-off threshold is approx. v = 30 km/h, if the partial high beams have been activated and deceleration from a speed of v > 45 km/h occurs.
Optical headlamp range adjustment (as of approx. v = 25 km/h)
Depending on the vehicle's distance to other road users and the road geometry (height difference, angle), the multifunction camera sends the "Optical headlamp range adjustment" request to the headlamp control units.
Vehicle with CODE 22P (Lane package) :
The multifunction camera sends the "Optical headlamp range adjustment" request over the chassis CAN 2 to the headlamp control units.
Vehicle with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus) :
The stereo multifunction camera sends the "Optical headlamp range adjustment" request over chassis FlexRay, the chassis gateway control unit, chassis CAN 2, the electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 to the headlamp control units.
The left headlamp control unit (E1n9) actuates the left headlamp range adjustment actuator motor (E1m1) and the left light distribution actuator motor (E1m3) directly.
The right headlamp control unit (E2n9) actuates the right headlamp range adjustment actuator motor (E2m1) and the right light distribution actuator motor (E2m3) directly.
The low beam cones are moved vertically upwards, thereby providing better road illumination without dazzling other road users. The light cone of the headlamps varies between s = 65 m (standard lighting) and s = 300 m.
The current position of the left light distribution actuator motor is detected by the left light distribution position sensor (E1b2) and the position of the right light distribution actuator motor is detected by the right light distribution position sensor (E2b2). The signals of the light distribution position sensors are evaluated by the respective headlamp control unit.
Automatic high beams (as of approx. v = 30 km/h)
If no other road users are detected, the multifunction camera activates the automatic high beams function.
Vehicle with CODE 22P (Lane package) :
The multifunction camera sends the "High beams ON" request over the chassis CAN 2 to the headlamp control units.
Vehicle with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus) :
The stereo multifunction camera sends the "High beams ON" request over chassis FlexRay, the chassis gateway control unit, chassis CAN 2, the electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 to the headlamp control units.
The activated function is visually indicated to the driver. To do so, the SAM control unit then sends the "High beams ON" status over the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the instrument cluster (A1), which then actuates the high beams indicator lamp (A1e3).
The left headlamp control unit actuates the left light distribution actuator motor directly, the left high beam (E1e1) via the left headlamp LIN (LIN G1) and the left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting (E1n7).
The right headlamp control unit actuates the right light distribution actuator motor directly, the right high beam (E2e1) via the right headlamp LIN (LIN G2) and the right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting (E2n7).
On roads with street lamps positioned regularly, the automatic high beams are deactivated.
Partial high beam (as of approx. v = 45 km/h) (with CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp)
If other road users are detected while the automatic high beams function is active, the multifunction camera activates the partial high beam function. The activated function is visually indicated to the driver. To do so, the SAM control unit then sends the "High beams ON" status over the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the instrument cluster, which then actuates the high beams indicator lamp.
Vehicle with CODE 22P (Lane package) :
Irrespective of the vehicle's distance to other road users and the road geometry (height difference, angle), the multifunction camera sends the "Light output setting" and the "Rotation angle setting" request over chassis CAN 2 to the headlamp control units.
Vehicle with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus) :
Depending on the distance of the vehicle to other road users and the road geometry (height difference, angle), the stereo multifunction camera sends "Light output setting" and "Rotation angle setting" request over the chassis FlexRay, the chassis gateway control unit, chassis CAN 2, the electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 to the headlamp control units.
The left headlamp control unit actuates the left light distribution actuator motor directly and sends the "Increase light output" request over the left headlamp LIN to the left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting. The left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting increases the lighting performance of the left high beam.
The right headlamp control unit actuates the right light distribution actuator motor directly and sends the "Increase light output" request over the right headlamp LIN to the right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting. The right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting increases the lighting performance of the right high beam.
Adaptive High Beam Assist limits:
In tight curves, the multifunction camera may not recognize oncoming vehicles or only do so very late due to the recording angle (∠= 35°). On streets with structural separation (e.g. guardrails on freeways) the headlamps of oncoming vehicles are often concealed. These vehicles cannot be recognized by the multifunction camera.
Due to the geometry of the structural separation and the location of the headlamps on cars, the drivers of the oncoming cars are not dazzled. Truck drivers, however, may be dazzled due to the high seat position. The clearance lamps on trucks are not sufficient for recognition.
When driving over hills, oncoming vehicles are not recognized until late whereupon the high beams are also switched off later. In this situation, however, the driver of the oncoming vehicle is also dazzled by the low beams.
The maximum range of the multifunction camera in poor light is approx. s = 500 m, and in good light it is approx. s = 800 m. A reduced range of vision (snow, fog, rain) can result in a reduced recognition performance.
When illuminating large, highly reflective areas (e.g. traffic signs) the power of the headlamps is reduced at less than a specific distance away in order to minimize any self-dazzling effect.
In the event of any restricted multifunction camera range of vision (fogging or icing), the Adaptive Highbeam Assist function is deactivated.
With bright lights that appear suddenly (e.g. street lamps, traffic lights, illumination of lots), the high beams are deactivated.
Some reflectors cannot be clearly differentiated by road users (e.g. motorcyclists). The high beams are deactivated because of the danger of dazzling other road users.
