Function requirements, general

Exterior lights (ABL), general

The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lights of the vehicle.

The exterior lights comprise the following subfunctions:

Further subfunctions are described in separate documents:

Function sequence for front lamp unit thermal management (with CODE 610 (Night View Assist))

The light functions for the parking, standing and turn signal lights as well as the cornering lights and infrared light are output via LEDs and controlled by the front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting.

To output the light functions of the parking, standing and turn signal lights, the SAM control unit actuates the front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting (circuit 58, circuit 49).

To output the light functions of the cornering lights and infrared light, the headlamp control unit actuates the front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting via headlamp LIN.

The front lamp units are each equipped with a temperature sensor for each light function, with which the heat development in the area of the actuated LEDs is recorded.

The front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting evaluate the signals of four temperature sensors each.

If the LEDs or the plastic housing of the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting reduce the actuation currents for the LEDs and thereby lower the heat development.

In addition to this, the front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting actuate the following components to additionally cool the LEDs or plastic housings of the front lamp units:

The fan motors are actuated either immediately or with a delay depending on which particular light function is active.

The active ventilation by means of the fan motors is also used for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units.

Function sequence, on-board network increase

When the on-board electrical system voltage is decreased by the energy management below the minimum voltage of a light function during normal driving operation, the SAM control unit can suppress shutoff of the corresponding light function with the aid of the on-board electrical system increase. The SAM control unit requests the minimum voltage required for the corresponding light function for this. The light functions for which the on-board electrical system increase is activated can be defined at the end of production.

The following functions can be coded:

Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights

By switching off the exterior lights, the on-board electrical system load by the active standing or parking lights actuation is reduced.

IMPORTANT Discharge of the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is prevented.

The low beams may be switched on due to the auto on/off driving lights, the daytime running lights or manually via the exterior lights switch. A prerequisite for this is that the status of circuit 15 is On. If circuit 15 is Off, the low beams are switched off.

The standing lights may be switched on because the low beams have been manually switched on, because of the auto on/off driving lights or manually via the exterior lights switch. If the standing light was manually switched on (exterior lights switch set to "standing light" position), it is switched off if the energy management determines that the engine starting capability has been impaired because the on-board electrical system battery has been discharged.

If the standing lights have been activated because of the manually activated low beams, auto on/off driving lights or daytime running lights and the driver door is opened with the status circuit 15C On, the standing lights are switched off.

IMPORTANT If the "Ambient illumination" function is activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the engine is turned off. The low beams and the standing lights remain switched on for t = 60 s. The "Ambient illumination" function is described in the separate document "Headlamp switch-off delay (SWA) function".
