Rear Seat Entertainment system, general 

The Rear Seat Entertainment system refers to the entire entertainment system for rear passengers. Applications can be operated in the following menu items:

The Rear Seat Entertainment system mainly comprises the following components:

IMPORTANT The cable-connected headphones are not part of the package contents.

The following components are also used by the Rear Seat Entertainment system, but are not essential for using the Rear Seat Entertainment system:

The listed menu items with their menus and submenus can be operated through the following controls on the remote control:

The control signals are transmitted via the infrared (IR) interfaces to the remote control and each display.

A headphones socket is integrated into each display, to which headphones can be directly connected (cable). The volume is adjusted using the "VOL +" and "VOL -" controls on the remote control. In addition, the preset volume can also be adjusted by the volume control of the respective headphones.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system consists of the following subfunctions:

Function requirements for switch on and off characteristics 

Switch on/off characteristics 

The Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched on or off using the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control.

After switching on, the last applications stored in the left rear display or the right rear display are shown on the respective display.

When the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control is actuated, the position of the "Roller" control determines whether the left rear display or the right rear display is switched on or off.

When switching off, the last application of a menu item executed on the display is stored in the relevant display.

The "Rear entertainment switch on/off behavior and system settings" function consists of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for switching on/off using the remote control 

The switch-on signal from the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control and the position of the "Roller" control on the remote control are transmitted to the respective display via the infrared interface on the remote control.

The respective display forwards the switch-on signal to the DVD player via telematics CAN.

At the same time, the respective display generates the audio and picture signals for the corporate identity (CI) screen for approx. t = 6 s.

The respective display then shows the applications last stored. The switch-off signal from the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control and the position of the "Roller" control on the remote control are sent over the infrared interface on the remote control and at the respective display.

The respective display forwards the switch-off signal to the DVD player via telematics CAN.

Function sequence for automatic switch-off through removal of the transmitter key 

When the transmitter key is removed from the electronic ignition lock control unit, a message that the transmitter key was removed is shown on the respective display and the user is asked whether he/she would like to continue with the application.

If the "4-zone controller with OK" control confirms the "OK" option on the remote control, the function remains active for approx. t = 30 minutes. The Rear Seat Entertainment system is then switched off.

If the prompt about whether the application should be continued is not confirmed with "OK" on the remote control, then the Rear Seat Entertainment system is immediately switched off.

The message on the respective display is generated by the display itself.

The control signals from the "4-zone controller with OK" control on the remote control are transmitted via the infrared interface on the remote control and at the respective display. The display uses the received status and the received control signals to generate the display.

The DVD player and the respective displays receive the status circuit 15C OFF (transmitter key removed) from the electronic ignition lock control unit via the following route:

System settings 

In the "System" menu item additional settings or operations can be made following switch-on. The "System" menu item with menus and submenus is selected, operated and adjusted on the display using the following controls:

Via the "System" menu item in the application field on each display, the "System settings" menu can be used to call up the relevant submenus and to make the relevant settings:

Function requirements for disc applications 

Disk applications 

The following video or audio sources are available in the "Disc" menu item:

The video or audio source is automatically detected.

The switched-on left rear display or right rear display shows the video or audio source in the "Disc" menu item.

IMPORTANT It is necessary to select the respective display using the "Roller" control on the remote control when the "DISK" menu item is operated via the remote control.

The "Rear entertainment disc applications" function consists of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for playing back a disc 

The DVD drive integrated into the DVD player decodes the digital data of the inserted disc (e.g. video DVD, audio CD or DVD, MP3-CD or DVD) and forwards these internally to the DVD player. The DVD player generates the analog audio and picture signals for the user interface of the "Disc" menu item on the respective display based on the digital data from the disc. The display shows the menus and the submenus in the "Disc" menu item (see operating instructions).

Selection of extra operations or settings can now be made using the listed controls on the remote control (see operating instructions).

The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interface of the remote control and the respective display.

Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for disc applications 

The DVD player transmits analog picture signals via a Y-brightness (Luminance)/C-color data (Chrominance) (Y/C) line to each display.

The display uses them to generate digital picture signals for picture display. Upon reception of the analog audio signals from the DVD player via the stereo line, the respective display generates the digital audio signals. These digital audio signals are transmitted via the radio interface of the respective display to the radio interface of the corresponding radio frequency headphones (cordless). Volume can only be adjusted using the volume control integrated in the headphones.

For vehicles with COMAND controller unit, the analog audio signals are also transmitted via by the DVD player via a stereo line to the COMAND controller unit and emitted via the speaker system.

The volume is adjusted at the COMAND controller unit via the following controls:

IMPORTANT The remote control can also be used to control the volume on the COMAND controller unit.

The control signals from the turning device of the COMAND controller unit are processed internally.

The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

The control signals from the + and - buttons for setting specific functions and volume control on the MFL are transferred to the COMAND controller unit via the following route:

Operating instructions for disc applications 

The video or audio source is automatically detected.

When a video DVD is detected, a scaled-down version of the video image and the "Disk" menu item are shown on the respective display with the associated menus broken down as follows:

When an MP3-CD or DVD is detected, a bar graph (bar indicator = number of tracks) with the current track, the artist and the current track position and the "Disc" menu item is shown on the respective display with the menus broken down as follows:

When an audio CD or DVD is detected, a bar graph (bar indicator = number of tracks) with the current track, the artist and the current track position and the "Disc" menu item is shown on the respective display with the menus broken down as follows:

The "Disc" menu item with menus and submenus is selected, operated and adjusted using the following controls on the remote control:

Function requirements for TV reception (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner) or with CODE 865 (TV tuner)) 

IMPORTANT The respective display must be selected using the "Roller" control on the remote control when the "TV" menu item with menus and submenus is being operated via the remote control.

TV reception (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner) or with CODE 865 (TV tuner)) 

The TV image or the interface is shown after selecting the "TV" menu item in the application bar of the left rear display or right rear display. The "Rear Seat Entertainment system TV reception" function consists of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for selection of the TV channel or video text 

The TV tuner (analog/digital) or the digital TV tuner receives the TV signals via direct lines from the following antenna amplifiers:

The TV tuner evaluates the TV signals and transmits the analog audio signals via a stereo line and the analog picture signals via a Y/C line to the DVD player. The DVD player forwards the analog audio signals via a stereo line and the analog picture signals via a Y/C line to the respective display. The interface is shown on the respective display.

The required TV channel or video text can be selected using the controls on the remote control. The signals from the controls on the remote control are transferred via the infrared interface on the remote control and at the respective display.

The display forwards the infrared signals to the TV tuner via the telematics CAN. The TV tuner evaluates these signals and transmits the analog audio signals via a stereo line and analog picture signals via a Y/C line of the received and selected TV channel back to the DVD player. The DVD player forwards the analog audio signals via a stereo line and the analog picture signals via a Y/C line to the respective display. The interface is shown on the respective display.

Settings in "TV" menu item via remote control function sequence 

The respective display uses the analog picture signals from the DVD player and the digital signals to generate the interface of the "TV" menu item on the respective display. The respective display shows the menus and their submenus in the "TV" menu item for the rear passenger. The rear passenger can perform the corresponding operations and settings using the specified controls on the remote control.

The signals from the controls on the remote control are transferred via the infrared interfaces to the remote control and to the respective display.

Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for TV reception 

The TV tuner transmits the picture signals of the received and selected TV channel via a Y/C line to the DVD player and from there via a Y/C line to the respective display. With analog picture signals the display converts the analog signals into digital picture signals.

The TV tuner transmits the audio signals of the received and selected TV channel to the DVD player via stereo lines and from there to the respective display. With analog audio signals the display converts the analog signals into digital audio signals. These digital audio signals are transmitted via the radio interface of the respective display to the radio interface of the corresponding radio frequency headphones (cordless).

Volume can only be adjusted using the volume control integrated in the radio frequency headphones.

IMPORTANT A headphones socket is integrated into each display, to which headphones can be directly connected (cable). The volume is adjusted using the "VOL +" and "VOL -" controls on the remote control. In addition, the preset volume can also be adjusted by the volume control of the respective headphones. The signals from the "VOL +" and "VOL -" controls on the remote control are transferred via infrared interfaces on the remote control and at the respective display.

Operating instructions for TV applications 

If the "TV menu item is called up via the "4-zone control with OK" control on the remote control, the TV screen appears on the respective display in full-screen mode. A control menu displaying the channel currently selected appears in the status bar of the respective display. The skip left and right symbols appear in the function bar of the respective display with the previous and next channel shown next to the respective symbol.

Full picture mode is terminated by pressing the "4-zone control with OK" control on the remote control. The "TV" menu item is displayed on the respective display with the associated menus broken down as follows:

IMPORTANT Irrespective of the settings on the COMAND controller unit, the currently received analog and digital TV channels can be selected.

However, simultaneous reception of different TV stations is not possible.

Function requirements for AUX applications 

AUX applications 

Additional video units or audio equipment (e.g. portable DVD player, video cameras, MP3 players or game consoles) can be connected to the Rear Seat Entertainment system via the AUX connection of a display or the DVD player. An equipment-specific interface is not provided by the respective display or by the DVD player in the "AUX" menu item for the video units or audio equipment. The video or audio devices are operated using the video or audio device itself.

The connected media sources are played back by the Rear Seat Entertainment system if they are manually selected via "AUX".

If a video source is connected, this is then automatically recognized. The background (headphones) on the display disappears and the video source is played back. If an audio source is connected, the background remains on the display and the audio source is played back. In the "AUX" menu item, the recognized video or audio source is shown on the switched-on display.

If a video unit or audio unit is connected to the AUX jack of a display or the DVD player, the depiction in the "AUX" menu item takes place on whichever display is switched on.

On vehicles with COMAND controller unit each video or audio source for the COMAND controller unit can be selected. The corresponding screen is displayed in the "COMAND" menu item on the respective switched-on display according to whether a video or audio source was selected through the COMAND controller unit.

Only information on the application currently active is displayed (e.g. radio station). The video or audio source of the COMAND controller unit is operated via the COMAND controller unit. Simple control functions at the COMAND (e.g. previous/next track) can also be carried out from the respective display.

IMPORTANT The "AUX" menu item is only active on a display that is switched on. It is only necessary to select the respective display using the "Roller" control when the "AUX" menu item is operated via the remote control.

The "AUX applications" function in the Rear Seat Entertainment system is made up of the following subfunctions:

Video unit detected function sequence 

The display or the DVD player automatically recognizes the connection of a video unit to an AUX jack.

The display uses the transmitted data from the video unit to generate the analog or digital video and audio signals and the digital interface of the "AUX" menu item on the display.

The respective display shows the menus and their submenus in the "AUX" menu item (see operating instructions).

Selection of extra operations or settings can now be made using the listed controls on the remote control (see operating instructions).

The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display.

Audio unit detected function sequence 

The display or the DVD player automatically recognizes the connection of an audio unit to an AUX jack.

The display uses the transmitted data from the audio equipment to generate the analog or digital audio signals and the digital interface of the "AUX" menu item on the display.

The respective display shows the menus and their submenus in the "AUX" menu item for the rear passenger (see operating instructions). Selection of extra operations or settings can now be made using the listed controls on the remote control (see operating instructions).

The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display.

Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for AUX applications 

After receiving the analog picture signals from the following AUX jacks via the following routes, the respective display generates the digital picture signals:

The generated digital picture signals are displayed via the respective display. After receiving the analog audio signals via the following route, the respective display generates the digital audio signals:

These digital audio signals are transmitted via the radio interfaces of the respective display and the corresponding radio frequency headphones to these (cordless).

Volume can only be adjusted using the volume control integrated in the respective radio frequency headphones.

IMPORTANT In the headphones sockets integrated into the displays for the connected headphones (cable-connected), the analog audio signals are sent from the display via the headphones cable to the headphones.

Operating instructions for AUX applications 

Video or audio output is performed automatically.

If a video unit is detected or a video source of the COMAND controller unit, the downsized video picture is shown in the application field and the "AUX" menu item, partitioned as follows, with the relevant menus on each display:

IMPORTANT The video or audio source of the COMAND controller unit is selected and operated via the COMAND controller unit only.
