The radio is centrally located in the instrument panel.

Tasks 

Central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle 

The radio provides the user with a structured and standard user interface for the following system components:

IMPORTANT The user interface is shown on the Audio/COMAND display. Using the "Vehicle functions" menu, equipment-dependent contents and functions of additional systems (e.g. climate control, seat adjustments) can be shown and controlled on the Audio/COMAND display.

The navigation functions can be used via a voice control system integrated in the navigation system.

Integration of Smartphones (model 166 as of 14.12.2015, model 292 as of 01.12.2015) 

The radio enables the integration of smartphones. In order to ensure that the content is prepared in a vehicle-related way, only apps that have been developed for the following integration standards are supported:

In order to use the smartphone applications, the smartphone must be connected via the universal serial bus (USB) to USB connector 2 (A90/5x2) of the multimedia connection unit (A90/5) and the integration standard selected via the telephone menu of the radio (unless automatic connection has been selected under "Options").

If a smartphone is connected and the Android Auto or CarPlay integration standard is active, the radio is switched to a special operating mode ("integration mode") in which not all radio functions can be used. The following radio functions are not available if Android Auto or CarPlay is activated:

Integration mode can be switched off via the radio.

The radio (AM and FM), vehicle settings and safety-relevant functions such as the emergency call function (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) can still be used.

With Android Auto, the following usage restrictions apply for the telephony: Calls can only be made through the connected smartphone. Telephony with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)) is not possible.

When in integration mode, the radio supports the smartphone applications as follows:

IMPORTANT The smartphone applications themselves are not shown in the instrument cluster.

IMPORTANT If the smartphone is being used to make a call, the radio receives and sends telephone signals from and to the smartphone via the Bluetooth® antenna (A2/91) for Android Auto, and via the USB connection to the multimedia connection unit for CarPlay.

Reading in of input signals as well as actuation of output media and system components 

The radio sends and receives signals via the following connections:

CAN 

The radio is a subscriber of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the interior CAN (CAN B):

Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) 

The radio exchanges data with the following control units over MOST:

Ethernet 

The radio is connected to the diagnostic connector (X11/4) via the Ethernet.

The radio is equipped with the following direct connections:
