Model 166

up to Model year 2016

Function requirements, general

Standing/parking lights, general

The standing lights/parking lights actuation serves the marking of the parked vehicle in darkness.

A differentiation is made between the following versions of the left front lamp unit (E1) and the right front lamp unit (E2) in accordance with the vehicle equipment:

Halogen version lamp units:

The standing light and parking light functions are output using conventional light sources (bulbs).

The SAM control unit (N10) actuates the following components in the front lamp units for this:

Lamp units in xenon design:

Instead of conventional bulbs, light emitting diodes (LED) are actuated to output the standing light and the parking lights functions. For this, the left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting (E1n7) is located at the side of the left front lamp unit and the right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting (E2n7) is located at the side of the right front lamp unit.

To output the standing light and parking light functions the SAM control unit switches a signal voltage (circuit 57) through to the front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting. The front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting are supplied with power by the SAM control unit.

The left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting actuates the following components in the left front lamp unit:

The right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting actuates the following components in the right front lamp unit:

IMPORTANT The front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting are diagnosed via the headlamp control unit (N71/1).

The standing/parking lights actuation includes the following subfunctions:

Standing lamp actuation function sequence

Turning the exterior lights switch (S1) to the "Standing lights" position requests actuation of the standing lights.

The SAM control unit directly reads in the status of the exterior lights switch and activates the standing lights actuation. At the same time, the SAM control unit sends the request to actuate the scale illumination in the instrument cluster (A1) and as of 01.07.2012 the standing light indicator lamp (A1e38) over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster then switches on the scale illumination and, as of 01.07.2012, actuates the standing lights indicator lamp.

Halogen version lamp units:

The SAM control unit actuates the following exterior lights components:

Lamp units in xenon design:

The SAM control unit actuates the following exterior lights components:

IMPORTANT Actuation of the exterior lights components in the rear area is identical in both versions.

On vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch), the SAM control unit also sends the "Standing light ON" request over the interior CAN to the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).

The trailer recognition control unit actuates the following components for the exterior lights on the trailer via the trailer socket (X58) (except CODE 460 (Canada version) and except CODE 494 (USA version)) or over the 7-pin trailer socket (X58/11) (with CODE 460 (Canada version) or CODE 494 (USA version)) :

IMPORTANT Model 166

up to Model year 2016

with CODE 460 (Canada version)

The SAM control unit also activates the low beams actuation when the engine is running.

Additional function requirements for lights on reminder

Function sequence for lights on reminder warning

The logic for requesting the lights on reminder function is stored in the SAM control unit.

The driver door status is sent by the left front door control unit (N69/1) and the status of circuit 15 is sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) via interior CAN.

The SAM control unit receives this information and from it generates the request for output of the lights on reminder function and transmits this to the instrument cluster over the interior CAN.

The instrument cluster then actuates the warning buzzer (A1h1). The message "switch light off" appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster.

The standing lights may be switched on because the low beams have been manually switched on, because of the auto on/off driving lights or manually via the exterior lights switch. If the standing lights have been activated because of the manually activated low beams, auto on/off driving lights or daytime running lights and the driver door is opened with circuit 15C On, the standing lights are switched off.

Parking lights actuation function sequence

By turning the exterior lights switch to the left parking lights position or the right parking lights position, the parking lights actuation is requested for the corresponding side of vehicle. The SAM control unit directly reads in the status of the exterior lights switch and activates the parking lights actuation.

Left parking light, halogen version lamp units:

The SAM control unit actuates the following exterior lights components:

Lamp units in xenon design:

The SAM control unit actuates the following exterior lights components:

IMPORTANT Actuation of the exterior lights components in the rear area is identical in both versions.

In vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch), the SAM control unit also sends the "Left parking light On" request over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the trailer recognition control unit.

The trailer recognition control unit actuates the following component of the exterior lights on the trailer over the trailer socket:

Right parking light, halogen version lamp units:

The SAM control unit actuates the following exterior lights components:

Lamp units in xenon design:

The SAM control unit actuates the following exterior lights components:

IMPORTANT Actuation of the exterior lights components in the rear area is identical in both versions.

In vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch), the SAM control unit also sends the "Right parking light On" request over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the trailer recognition control unit.

The trailer recognition control unit actuates the following component of the exterior lights on the trailer over the trailer socket:

IMPORTANT If the interior CAN is in a "bus idle" state, the parking lights actuation remains saved in the trailer recognition control unit until deactivation is requested by the SAM control unit, even if this causes the on-board electrical system voltage to collapse and the on-board electrical system battery (G1) to be completely discharged.
