General 

Charging compresses the fresh air sucked in and increases the cylinder charge level. The engine output increases.

Function 

The exhaust gases reach the turbine wheel via the intake on the exhaust gas turbocharger's turbine wheel housing.

A narrowing causes the thermal energy to convert into kinetic energy and the turbine wheel to start turning.

The turbine wheel sits on the same shaft as the compressor wheel. The rotation of the turbine wheel causes the compressor impeller to turn and this then sucks in fresh air.

The fresh air sucked in is compressed in the compressor wheel housing and reaches the engine through an outlet via the charge air cooler.
