Actuate Driving Lights, Basic Function - GF82.10-P-1013A

MODEL ALL (CAR)

Overview

This document contains the following information:

General

Driving lights include all the light functions required for optimum illumination of the roadway:

Vehicles with LFD headlamps

The front lamp units are equipped with fan motors. Operation of the fan motors provides active ventilation of the front lamp units (thermal management).

The fan motors are switched on when low beam or high beam are switched on.

Actuate low beam

The low beam illuminates the roadway without dazzling other road users. The low beam can be switched on and off manually or automatically. Low beam headlamps are operated using the exterior lights switch.

Function requirement

Operating principle

The central controller unit (control unit of the exterior lighting) actuates the low beam in the front lamp units itself or requests the actuation. This takes place depending on the version of the front lamp units (halogen headlamps or LED headlamps).

An indicator lamp shows when low beam is switched on.

Vehicles with halogen headlamps

The difference in light colors for the light sources means that the standing lights are switched off when low beam is on.

The front standing lights are not switched off in the following countries:

Actuate automatic low beam

The low beam is switched on or off depending on the ambient brightness or depending on the activities of the windshield wiper system. The ambient brightness is sensed by the light sensor in the rain and light sensor. The central control unit actuates the windshield wiper system and provides information on its activities.

The automatic low beam is purely a comfort function and it does not relieve the driver of the need to follow the operating instructions as prescribed by the road traffic regulations.

In the event of any light sensor failure, the low beam is not deactivated until the engine is switched off.

If the windshield wiper system is active for 20 s with a wipe cycle time of less than 6 s, the low beam is switched on. If there are no wipe cycles for 60 s, the low beam is switched off. The low beam remains switched on when the wiper start suppression is active. If the wiper startup suppression function is canceled, the low beam remains switched on for a further 60 s.

IMPORTANT With automatic low beam, the low beam and the standing lights are automatically switched on and off.

Function requirements

The central controller unit (control unit of the exterior lighting) actuates the low beam in the front lamp units itself or requests the actuation. This takes place depending on the version of the front lamp units (halogen headlamps or LED headlamps).

EXTERIOR LIGHTS WITH AUTOMATIC LOW BEAM (NIGHT)

Start of trip Standing lamp Low beam
Transmitter key not in the vehicle interior Off Off
Transmitter key in the vehicle interior Off Off
Circuit 15R ON On Off
Terminal 15 ON On after 2 s Off
Engine running or drivetrain operational or vehicle speed more than 3 km/h Off (country-dependent) On (high beams permissible)
End of trip
At the end of a trip, overlaps may occur between the automatic low beam and the headlamp switch-off delay.
Standing lamp  Low beam
Engine running or drivetrain operational or vehicle speed more than 3 km/h Off On (high beams permissible)
Transmitter key in the vehicle interior (driver door closed) On Off
Transmitter key in the vehicle interior (driver door open) Off Off
Transmitter key not in the vehicle interior Off Off

Actuate high beam

The high beam provides sufficient wide-area illumination of the roadway. There is a risk here however of dazzling other road users.

The high beam is operated using the combination switch.

IMPORTANT If the combination switch is pulled back and held (headlamp flashing), the high beam is switched on for a maximum of 30 s. After this, a permanently pending request is interpreted as being defective and the high beam is switched off.

Function requirements

Operating principle

The central controller unit (control unit of the exterior lighting) actuates the high beam in the front lamp units itself or requests the actuation. This takes place depending on the version of the front lamp units (halogen headlamps or LED headlamps).

An indicator lamp shows when the high beam is switched on.
