Function requirements for further telematics services, general 

Additional telematics services in general 

At the vehicle side, the telematics services are realized by the telematics services communications module via a mobile radio connection to the Service Center. The telematics services communications module sends and receives mobile phone signals over the communications module/stationary heater antenna (A2/129), and over the communications module/stationary heater antenna splitter (A2/125) (with code B24 (Remote control for stationary heater)).

In vehicles with code 06U (Mercedes connect me basic services) the following services are also available:

In vehicles with code 05U (Remote Online), various app services can also be enabled. These app services allow the customer to use his terminals (e.g. Smartphone, tablet or PC) to transmit information and operating requests to the vehicle via the Service Center and receive up-to-date vehicle data that has been prepared by the app. For example, the following app service are available:

The telematics services function encompasses the following subfunctions:

Voice connection between vehicle and Service Center 

By selecting the reserved telephone book entry "MB-Contact" or by operating the breakdown assistance button, MB-Info button, the telematics services communications module sets up a voice connection over the communications module/stationary heater antenna to the Mercedes-Benz service center.

IMPORTANT The setup of a voice connection to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center is aborted after several unsuccessful dialing attempts, and a corresponding message appears on the Audio/COMAND display.

Telematics services, e.g. the breakdown service, can also be triggered by the Service Center following an emergency call with the customer's consent. In this case, the voice connection that was set up for the emergency call is used again by means of transferring within the Service Center. The emergency call is then converted into a service with lower priority.

The voice connection function between the vehicle and the Service Center is split up into the following subfunctions:

Selection of telephone book entry "MB Contact" 

The permanently reserved telephone book entry "MB-Contact" can be selected using one of the following components:

Audio/COMAND control panel 

The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the head unit via telematics CAN.

Multifunction steering wheel button groups 

The control signals from the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded over the following components:

Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with code 531 (COMAND APS)) 

The voice control system is activated on the left multifunction steering wheel button group. The voice control system is automatically switched off when the call is set up.

The control signal from the left multifunction steering wheel button group is forwarded as follows:

Head unit

When the voice control system is active, the voice commands are recorded by the hands-free system microphone (A67b1) and forwarded over a direct line to the head unit.

IMPORTANT The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

Touchpad (up to 31.05.2015 with code 522 (Audio 20 radio), with code 531 (COMAND APS); as of 01.06.2015 with code 448 (Touchpad)) 

The head unit receives the control signals from the touchpad via the telematics CAN.

Connection set up through the "MB-Contact" telephone book entry 

If the "MB Contact" telephone book entry was selected, the head unit sends a prompt to set up a voice connection as follows:

Telematics services communication module

The telematics services communications module establishes a voice connection to the Service Center via the communications module/stationary heater antenna and transmits vehicle data.

Connection set up through the overhead control panel control unit 

The towing services, breakdown assistance as well as some functions related to service and maintenance service can be used by pressing the breakdown assistance button (N70s12) or the MB-Info button (N70s13) of the overhead control panel.

The telematics services communications module receives the control signal from the buttons as follows:

Roof LIN (LIN B13) →

The telematics services communications module establishes a voice connection to the Service Center via the communications module/stationary heater antenna and transmits vehicle data.

Mute function 

When a voice connection is set up, the telematics services communications module sends a signal to mute the audio sources over a direct line to the following component, which actuates the speaker system:

Hands-free 

The hands-free system is not available for telephone calls for the duration of the voice connection.

After a data telegram has been transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center, the user can speak to a service receptionist via the voice connection. The Mercedes-Benz Service Center carries out the call in the language that was selected in the system settings of the head unit and transmitted in the data telegram.

The telematics services communications module receives the outgoing voice signals from the hands-free system microphone over the head unit.

The telematics services communications module emits the incoming voice signals over the center instrument panel speaker (H4/27).

The volume of the voice output can be adjusted using the following controls:

Position finding 

Determining the current vehicle location is vital for many telematics services, for which reason the telematics services communications module has its own position finding module. The telematics services communications module uses the satellite-supported global positioning system (GPS) to find its location. GPS is available worldwide. GPS position finding is irretrievable after vehicle transport (e.g. by train or ferry or after towing). Recalculation of the GPS position (following an interruption in satellite reception) can take several minutes. A basic position finding routine runs in parallel to the GPS position finding routine that makes it possible to also locate the position of the vehicle if GPS reception fails.

The telematics services communications module can also access the head unit's positioning data.

The position finding function consists of the following component functions:

GPS position finding 

In vehicles with code 520 (Audio 20 USB), the telematics services communications module receives the GPS signal from the GPS antenna (A2/23).

In vehicles with code 522 (Audio 20 radio) or with code 531 (COMAND APS) the head unit receives the GPS signal from the GPS antenna and routes it as follows to the telematics services communications module:

Basic position finding 

The telematics services communications module requires the following signals for basic position finding:

The telematics services communications module receives the wheel speed and yaw rate signals from the Electronic Stability Program control unit via the following route:

The telematics services communications module receives the signal from the steering wheel angle sensor via the following route:

The telematics services communications module uses the data to calculate the current vehicle position (longitude and latitude).

IMPORTANT Position finding errors, rolling backwards with "circuit 15 OFF" (ignition switched off) or transport of the vehicle falsify the basic position finding. In both cases, this deviation is automatically corrected on receipt of GPS data.

Forwarding of vehicle data, display messages, data queries and operating requests 

The telematics services communications module forwards the data queries and operating requests that have been received via the mobile radio connection to the Service Center via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit. The telematics services communications module receives vehicle data from the electronic ignition lock control unit via the diagnostic CAN, and forwards this data and the data of the integrated position finding module over the communication module/stationary heater antenna to the Service Center to meet requirements.

The content shown on the Audio/COMAND display (e.g. pop-up window, vehicle locating symbol) is sent by the telematics services communications module as follows:
