Information on touchpad 

The touchpad is installed in two variants.

Variant (with code 448 (Touchpad)): The touchpad is installed together with the Audio/COMAND control panel. The touchpad is connected only to the telematics CAN.

Variant 2 (with code 446 (Touchpad only)): The touchpad is installed instead of the Audio/COMAND control panel. In this case, the left lower control panel and the right lower control panel are connected over the LCP LIN to the touchpad. The touchpad is also connected to the telematics CAN.

Function requirements, general 

General telematics services 

At the vehicle side, the telematics services are realized by the HERMES control unit via a cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center. The HERMES control unit transmits and receives the mobile phone signals via the emergency call system antenna, the telephone antenna splitter, the left telephone antenna and the right telephone antenna (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)).

IMPORTANT The emergency call system antenna, the left telephone antenna and the right telephone antenna are used simultaneously and form a transmission and reception diversity.

For some services, the status of circuit 15 is taken into consideration.

The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the circuit status via the diagnostics CAN to the HERMES control unit.

For some services, a WLAN connection to the head unit is required. The head unit receives the WiFi signals from the HERMES control unit over the following antennas:

The telematics services function encompasses the following subfunctions:

IMPORTANT The emergency call, Internet connection and the transfer of real-time traffic data are described elsewhere.

Standard telematics services 

The following services, e.g. are available:

Telematics services with code 11U (Remote Online), code 09U (Vehicle monitoring), or code 531 (COMAND APS) 

These app services allow customer to use their terminals (e.g. smartphone, tablet or PC) to send information and operation requests via the Service Center to the vehicle and receive up-to-date vehicle data prepared by the app.

The following telematics services are possible, e.g.:

IMPORTANT The telematics services can be used only in conjunction with a valid subscription.

Additional telematics services with code 506 (Audio 20 NTG 5.5 radio), or code 531 (COMAND APS), or code 355 (Extended MBUX functions)

The following services, e.g. are available:

IMPORTANTRemote Start:  Using the cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center, the HERMES control unit also receives the triggering signal for the "Remote Start" function (for pre-entry climate control). The "Remote Start" function starts the engine of a parked and locked vehicle (windows and doors closed) and, after a defined period, switches it off again to enable the "Load Mode" to achieve a pre-entry climate control of the A/C system. The HERMES control unit forwards the triggering signal via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit.

Additional function requirements for voice connection between vehicle and Service Center 

Voice connection between vehicle and Service Center 

IMPORTANT The setup of a voice connection to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center is aborted after several unsuccessful dialing attempts, and a corresponding message appears on the Audio/COMAND display.

The voice connection function between the vehicle and the Service Center is split up into the following subfunctions:

Triggering the voice connection via the overhead control panel 

After pressing the breakdown assistance button or the MB info button (model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) up to 31.05.2019), or the Mercedes me connect button (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253.99, model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2020), the HERMES control unit establishes a voice connection to the Service Center.

The overhead control panel control unit transmits the operation signal via the roof LIN, the front SAM control unit, the interior CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the diagnostics CAN to the HERMES control unit.

Model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253.99, model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2019 

The overhead control panel control unit transmits the operation signal via the interior CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the diagnostics CAN to the HERMES control unit.

The overhead control panel control unit reads in the operation signals of the emergency call system button group directly.

IMPORTANT At the same time as a voice connection is established, a data telegram is sent to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center containing, e.g. the following data: time stamp, global navigation system (GPS) position, the language configured in the head unit and the vehicle identification number.

While the voice connection is active, the light-emitting diode integrated in the button flashes; for this, the HERMES control unit actuates the Mercedes me connect button, the breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button in the opposite direction.

This is also indicated in the instrument cluster and on the audio/COMAND display. The HERMES control unit transmits the display request to the instrument cluster and head unit via the diagnostic CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN. The head unit sends this over the LVDS line (model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) up to 31.05.2019), or the HSVL line (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253.99, model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2019) to the Audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT The Service Center can perform a remote diagnosis if necessary.

IMPORTANT The Service Center can transmit map data to the vehicle if necessary. The data is made available to the navigation module of the head unit.

Triggering the voice connection via the "MB-Contact" address book entry 

By selecting the permanently reserved address book entry "MB-Contact", the HERMES control unit establishes a voice connection to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center via the emergency call system antenna/telephone antenna splitter and the left telephone antenna, right telephone antenna (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)).

The permanently reserved address book entry "MB-Contact" can be selected using the following components:

IMPORTANT The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

If the address book entry "MB Contact" has been selected, the head unit transmits the signal to the HERMES control unit via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and diagnostic CAN.

Mute function 

When a voice connection is set up, the HERMES control unit transmits a signal for muting the audio sources via a direct line to the following components, which actuate the speaker system:

Hands-free 

The hands-free system is not available for telephone calls for the duration of the voice connection.

After a data telegram has been transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center, the user can speak to a service receptionist via the voice connection. The Mercedes-Benz Service Center carries out the call in the language that was selected in the system settings of the head unit and transmitted in the data telegram, where possible.

The HERMES control unit receives the outgoing voice signals over the head unit from the hands-free system microphone (model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) up to 31.05.2019), or from the driver's hands-free system microphone (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253.99, model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2019).

The HERMES control unit outputs the incoming voice signals over the center instrument panel speaker.

The volume of the voice output can be adjusted using the following controls:

Model 205 up model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) up to 31.05.2019 

The steering wheel electronics reads in the operation signals of the right multifunction steering wheel button groups directly and transmits them via the steering LIN, the steering column tube module control unit, the suspension FlexRay, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the diagnostics CAN to the HERMES control unit.

Model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253.99, model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2019 

The steering wheel electronics reads in the operation signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button groups directly and transmits them via the steering wheel CAN, the steering column tube module control unit, the suspension FlexRay, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the diagnostics CAN to the HERMES control unit.

The left lower control panel or the right lower control panel sends the volume setting over the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)), or touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)), telematics CAN, head unit, user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the diagnostic CAN to the HERMES control unit.

Termination of the voice connection 

The voice connection can be ended using the right multifunction steering wheel button group (model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) up to 31.05.2019), or the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253.99, model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2019), if this has not already been done by the Mercedes-Benz Service Center.

Prioritization 

For the services that require a voice connection between the vehicle and the Service Center, the prioritization shown below applies.

IMPORTANT Telematics services, e.g. accident management, can also be triggered by the Service Center after an emergency call with the customer's consent. In this case, the voice connection that was set up for the emergency call is used again by means of transferring within the Service Center. The emergency call is then converted into a service with lower priority.

Position finding 

A determination of the current vehicle position is essential for many telematics services. On vehicles with code 531 (COMAND APS), or with code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit), the HERMES control unit takes on the signals of the position finding from the head unit. The head unit transmits the signals to the HERMES control unit via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and diagnostic CAN. On Model 205, Model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2019 with code 531 (COMAND APS), or with code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit), or with code 355 (Extended MBUX functions), the HERMES control unit also performs its own position finding. As a result, the HERMES control unit can immediately compensate for a failure of the signals from the head unit.

Position finding is carried out by the HERMES control unit on vehicles except code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit), and except code 531 (COMAND APS).

For position finding, the HERMES control unit uses the global navigation system (GPS). GPS is available worldwide. GPS position finding is irretrievable after vehicle transport (e.g. by train or ferry or after towing). Recalculation of the GPS position (following an interruption in satellite reception) can take several minutes. A basic position finding routine runs in parallel to the GPS position finding routine that makes it possible to also locate the position of the vehicle if GPS reception fails.

The position finding function consists of the following component functions:

GPS position finding (Model 205, Model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2019 or for vehicles except code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit), and except code 531 (COMAND APS)) 

The HERMES control unit receives the GPS signals from the GPS antenna. On vehicles up to 31.05.2019 with code 506 (Audio 20 NTG 5.5 radio), and code 830 (Additional parts for China vehicles), the HERMES control unit receives the GPS signals over the global positioning system antenna splitter.

Additional function requirements for basic position finding (Model 205, Model 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2019 or vehicles except code 355 (Pre-installation for navigation retrofit), and except code 531 (COMAND APS))

The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the status of circuit 15 to the HERMES control unit via diagnostic CAN.

The HERMES control unit requires the following signals for basic position finding:

The HERMES control unit uses the data to calculate the current vehicle position (longitude and latitude).

IMPORTANT Location faults during position finding: Rolling backwards with circuit 15 OFF or vehicle transportation falsify basic position finding. In both cases, this deviation is automatically corrected on receipt of GPS data.

Forwarding of vehicle data, display messages, data queries and operating requests 

The HERMES control unit forwards the data, data queries and operating requests that have been received via the cellular telephone system connection to the service center via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit, from where they are distributed further according to the respective requests. The HERMES control unit receives vehicle data via the diagnostics CAN from the electronic ignition lock control unit and transmits it along with the position finding data via the emergency call system antenna, the telephone antenna splitter, the left telephone antenna and the right telephone antenna (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)), according to requirements, to the Service Center.

The HERMES control unit transmits the content displayed on the Audio/COMAND display (e.g. pop-up window, vehicle locating symbol, field strength) to the head unit via the diagnostic CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN. The head unit sends this over the LVDS line (model 205 up to model year 2019, model 253 (except 253.99) up to 31.05.2019), or the HSVL line (model 205 as of model year 2019, model 253.99, 253 (except 253.99) as of 01.06.2019) to the Audio/COMAND display.

The head unit transmits the control communication (e.g. switch on) to the Audio/COMAND display via the telematics CAN.

Some text messages on the Audio/COMAND display can be confirmed with the Audio/COMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)), or the touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad), or with code 446 (Touchpad only)). The Audio/COMAND control panel or the touchpad transmits the signals to the HERMES control unit via the telematics CAN, head unit, user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and diagnostics CAN.

Tracking and alert with ATA (with code 551 (anti-theft alarm system (ATA))) 

The purpose of tracking is:

The tracking function encompasses the following subfunctions:

ATA alarm 

Approx. 30 s after an ATA alarm has been triggered, the front SAM control unit transmits the status "ATA alarm active" to the HERMES control unit via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and diagnostic CAN.

The HERMES control unit transmits the status "ATA alarm active" via the emergency call system antenna, the telephone antenna splitter, the left telephone antenna and the right telephone antenna (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) to the Service Center. The Service Center receives this status and informs the vehicle owner that the ATA alarm has been triggered. The Service Center does not trigger tracking at this stage.

Vehicle theft telephone message from vehicle owner to police and then to Service Center 

If the vehicle owner has been informed by the Service Center that their vehicle has been stolen, or if they notice themselves that the vehicle has been stolen, then the vehicle owner must contact the police and report the theft. The vehicle owner receives a special number from the police, which confirms that the vehicle theft has been reported.

With this number, the vehicle owner can report to the Service Center, by telephone, and give this number to the employee there. The Service Center checks the request and legitimization (authorization) of the vehicle owner.

Vehicle tracking 

Once the theft has been reported to the Service Center and legitimization (authorization) has been provided by the Service Center, an initiation command is transmitted to the vehicle. The initiation command is received by the communication module integrated in the HERMES control unit via the emergency call system antenna, the telephone antenna splitter, the left telephone antenna and the right telephone antenna (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)). The HERMES control unit then activates the position finding and also the voice connection to the vehicle, if necessary.

The HERMES control unit then transmits the position data via the emergency call system antenna, the telephone antenna splitter, the left telephone antenna and the right telephone antenna (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) to the Service Center.

The position data is transmitted cyclically and for the following events:

The Service Center forwards the location of the vehicle to the responsible command staff (e.g. police). The command staff can then decide whether or not to speak to the driver.

IMPORTANT Vehicle tracking can only be deactivated by the Service Center.
