Control and display concept
The aim of the control and display concept is to provide a high degree of user friendliness.
This aim is achieved by:
- Easily understandable and visible symbol logic
- Ergonomics: all major controls are located within the driver's radius of action
- Low potential for distraction during control operations
- Understandable menu structures
- Intuitive, targeted menu guidance
Another aspect of the user-friendly interaction between man and machine is the graphic display of the user interfaces. Two independent color displays are used for this.
Information is conveyed in an understandable way by means of visualizations, animations and sound concepts. Animated contents help the user to understand the consequences of his actions. Sound concepts allow the driver to recognize the purpose of the action from its acoustics. Be it to direct the driver's attention to the vehicle's surroundings, to alert him to system messages or to prompt him to confirm an operator action.
A variety of functions can be operated from various control points. The integration of mobile devices means that external applications, too, can be included in the operating concept. However, some functions, e.g. voice control, are unavailable if, for example, a smartphone is integrated.
All settings can also be personalized. The user interface helps with decision making and proposes intelligent suggestions for this. This is based on user-specific settings and driving habits, e.g. radio stations and sound settings as well as the time and location.

Display concept of head unit/instrument cluster display cluster
The head unit/instrument cluster display cluster contains the instrument cluster (6), which is located on the driver's side, and the multimedia display (7) in the center.
Instrument cluster (6)
The instrument cluster (6) provides the driver with relevant information, e.g. fuel supply, engine speed and coolant temperature, in a clearly arranged format. It also informs him about the current condition of the systems installed in vehicle. System actions, recommendations and malfunctions are communicated to the driver in the form of text messages.
The displayed content is freely configurable. The display in the instrument cluster (6) is operated with the left finger navigation pad on the multifunction steering wheel (1). The user can choose between various different visual styles depending on mood or to match the interior.
In full screen mode for navigation, driver assistance and trip data, the most important contents are already shown in a combined summary. In vehicles with Head-up Display, information relevant to driving (e.g. speed, navigation instructions) can be projected redundantly onto the windshield in the driver's field of view. The displaying of this information means that the driver does not have to avert his eyes from driving activities. The personalized settings of the Head-up Display can be retrieved via the memory function in vehicles with memory function.
Multimedia display (7)
The multimedia display (7) shows information from the multimedia system and information about the settings of various systems in the vehicle. The surface of the multimedia display (7) is touch-sensitive.
The multimedia system and various system settings in the vehicle can be operated using the following control elements:
- Multimedia display (7)
- Touchpad (3) (vehicles with touchpad)
- Right finger navigation pad on multifunction steering wheel (1)
The network architecture connects all the participating systems, control elements, control units and display elements with each other.
The operating concept is based on several levels of increasing information density:
- Top operating level, home screen: For changing between applications and for displaying the most important information from all systems (e.g. arrival time, currently playing track).
- Second operating level: Main applications, e.g. radio, each contain the most important information and operating options.
- Third operating level: Rarely used information and settings are listed in the sub-menus.
Further components of the operating concept can be:
- Gesture detection system (vehicles with Connect 20 multimedia system): The display in the multimedia display (7) is controlled using swiping movements in front of the multimedia display (7).
- Voice control: The voice control function can be used to operate various functions, e.g. track search, navigation, or vehicle functions, e.g. climate control, seat heating.
