Symbol and ambiance illumination in general 

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior. Symbol and ambiance illumination encompasses the following subfunctions:

• Function sequence for search and symbol illumination 
• Function sequence for ambiance illumination (with CODE 877 (Ambiance illumination)) 

Function sequence for search and symbol illumination 

Activating the switch and controls and symbol illumination makes it easier for the driver to find important controls and to look for objects in the vehicle without having to switch on the ignition or the exterior lights.

The search and symbol illumination is switched on by unlocking the vehicle remotely, by opening a vehicle door or by changing the status of circuit 15. The luminosity to be used to implement the search and symbol illumination can be continuously adjusted using the instrument illumination brightness control in the exterior lights switch. The front SAM control unit reads in the signals from the instrument illumination brightness control directly and sends them via interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

After unlocking the vehicle or opening a vehicle door, the search and symbol illumination is switched on with 100 % luminosity.

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of the central locking system and the status of circuit 15 over the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The front door control units send the status of the front doors (open or closed) via interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The status of the rear doors (Model 205.0/1/2, Model 253) (open or closed) is sent by the rear door control units via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit, and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster evaluates all incoming information, generates the circuit 58d signal and transmits it via the user interface CAN to the following control units to activate the search and symbol illumination:

• Electronic ignition switch control unit
• Head unit

The electronic ignition lock control unit actuates the following component:

• KEYLESS GO start/stop button

The head unit activates the integrated controls and sends the circuit 58d signal over the telematics CAN to the following control units, which then switch on the integrated controls:

• Audio/COMAND® display
• Audio/COMAND® control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only))
• Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only), or code 448 (Touchpad))

The Audio/COMAND® operating unit (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) or the touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only), or code 448 (Touchpad)) transmits the circuit 58d signal via the LCP-LIN to the following switch panels, which then actuate the integrated control elements:

• Upper control panel control unit
• Left lower control panel
• Right lower control panel

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 58d signal via the chassis FlexRay to the steering column tube module control unit.

The steering column tube module control unit actuates the following components:

• Actuation over steering wheel CAN and steering wheel electronics:
  • Instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group
  • Head unit multifunction steering wheel button group
• Direct actuation:
  • DIRECT SELECT lever (transmission 722, 724, 725)

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 58d signal via interior CAN to the following control units:

• Front SAM control unit
• Rear SAM control unit
• Climate Control control unit
• Left front door control unit
• Right front door control unit
• Left rear door control unit (Model 205.0/1/2.253)
• Right rear door control unit (Model 205.0/1/2, Model 253)
• Overhead control panel control unit

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components:

• Direct actuation:
  • Exterior lights switch
  • Cigarette lighter with front ashtray illumination (with code 301 (Ashtray package/smoker package))
  • Stowage compartment illumination (with CODE 876 (Interior lights package))
  • Right front footwell lamp (with code 876 (Interior Light Package) except code 877 (Ambient lighting))
  • Left front footwell lamp (with code 876 (Interior Light Package) except code 877 (Ambient lighting))
  • Electric parking brake switch
• Actuation via the instrument panel LIN:
• Analog clock (Model 205 with code 246 (Analog clock))
• Driver's side instrument panel button group (with code 235 (Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC), code 243 (Active Lane Keeping Assist), code 266 (DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop & Go Pilot), or code 463 (Head-up Display) or as of 01.06.2019 with code 540 (Electric roller sunblind for rear window), or code U02 (Seat belt extender, electric))

The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:

• Left rear footwell lamp (Model 205.1 except code 877 (Ambient lighting))
• Right rear footwell lamp (Model 205.1 except code 877 (Ambient lighting))

The overhead control panel control unit directly actuates the switch, controls and symbol illumination of the integrated controls and the following components:

• Surround lamp in inside mirror
• Left overhead control panel light-emitting diode (Model 205.4)
• Right overhead control panel light-emitting diode (Model 205.4)
• Rear ambiance illumination dome lamp in the rear dome lamp (Model 205.3 with code 876 (Interior lights package))
• Emergency call system button group (Model 205.4 with code 351 (Emergency call system (HERMES))
• Eyeglasses box illumination (with CODE 876 (Interior lights package))

The eyeglass box illumination is powered by the overhead control panel control unit irrespective of the circuit 58d signal. The eyeglasses box illumination is actuated as of circuit 15R ON.

The climate control unit actuates the controls and symbol illumination of the following operating units via the air conditioning operating LIN:

• Climate control operating unit
• Rear air conditioning operating unit (with code 581 (Automatic air conditioning))

The left front door control unit actuates the following components:

• Actuation via left front door LIN:
  • Driver-side power window and outside mirror adjustment switch group
  • Left front switch group, seat adjustment (with CODE 275 (Memory package), or code 221 (Electrically adjustable left driver seat))
  • Left front seat climate control switch group (with code 401 (Seat climate control for driver and front passenger), or code 403 (Airscarf system), or code 873 (Seat heating for driver and front passenger))
• Direct actuation:
  • Left front door handle illumination (with CODE 876 (Interior lights package))
  • Trunk lid release button (Model 205.0/1/3/4 except CODE 881 (Remote trunk closing))
  • Driver trunk lid/liftgate control button (Model 205.0/1/3 with code 881 (Remote trunk closing), Model 205.2, Model 253 with code 890 (EASY-PACK liftgate))
  • Left front door central locking interior switch

The right front door control unit actuates the following components:

• Actuation via right front door LIN:
  • Front right switch group, seat adjustment (with CODE 242 (Electrically adjustable front passenger seat with memory function), or code 222 (Electrically adjustable right front seat))
  • Right front seat climate control switch group (with code 401 (Seat climate control for driver and front passenger), or code 403 (Airscarf system), or code 873 (Seat heating for driver and front passenger))
• Direct actuation:
  • Right front door handle illumination (with CODE 876 (Interior lights package))
  • Passenger-side power window switch
  • Right front door central locking interior switch

The left rear door control unit (Model 205.0/1/2, Model 253) actuates the following components:

• Actuation via left rear door LIN:
  • Left rear seat heater button (with code 872 (Seat heating in rear passenger compartment))
• Direct actuation:
  • Left rear door handle illumination (with CODE 876 (Interior lights package))
  • Left rear power window switch

The right rear door control unit (Model 205.0/1/2, Model 253) actuates the following components:

• Actuation via right rear door LIN:
  • Right rear seat heater button (with code 872 (Seat heating in rear passenger compartment))
• Direct actuation:
  • Right rear door handle illumination (with CODE 876 (Interior lights package))
  • Right rear power window switch

The door handle illumination is actuated after circuit 15C has been switched off for an additional t = 2 min (run-on).

Symbol illumination for trunk lid/liftgate control button (Model 205.0/1/3 with code 881 (Remote trunk closing), Model 205.2, Model 253 with code 890 (EASY-PACK liftgate)) 

The trunk lid/liftgate control button on the trunk lid or on the liftgate is supplied with power by the rear SAM control unit when the trunk lid or liftgate is open irrespective of the circuit 58d signal. The rear SAM control unit independently evaluates the status of the trunk lid or the liftgate (open or closed).

Symbol illumination for trunk lid emergency opening switch (Model 205.0/1/3/4 with CODE 494 (USA version)) 

The rear SAM control unit actuates the trunk lid emergency opening switch directly irrespective of the circuit 58d signal. The trunk lid emergency opening switch is actuated with a frequency of 1 Hz after the trunk lid has been closed for 60 min and flashes in green. The rear SAM control unit independently evaluates the status of the trunk lid (open or closed).

Function sequence for ambiance illumination (with CODE 877 (Ambiance illumination)) 

The ambient lighting is switched on by unlocking the vehicle remotely, by opening a vehicle door or by changing the status of circuit 15. In the process, different areas of the vehicle interior are illuminated indirectly.

The luminosity and the color in which the ambiance illumination is to be designed can be adjusted using a corresponding menu in the head unit.

The following zones can also be selected via this menu:

• "Front" zone, driver and front passenger area
• "Rear" zone, rear area
• "Complete" zone, all areas

The luminosity can be set in several stages. 64 different colors can be selected.

The head unit transmits the relevant information about these settings via the user interface CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the ambiance illumination control unit.

After a vehicle door is opened, the ambiance illumination is actuated with 100_% luminosity.

For hybrid vehicles, the ambient lighting is activated at the start of a stationary charging process. The stationary charging function is described in a separate document.

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of the central locking and the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN to the ambiance illumination control unit.

The front door control units transmit the status of the front doors (open or closed) to the ambiance illumination control unit via the interior CAN. The status of the rear doors (open or closed) is transmitted by the rear door control units via the interior CAN to the ambient lighting control unit.

The ambiance illumination is deactivated 3 s after the vehicle is locked.

The ambient lighting control unit evaluates all incoming information and then actuates the following component parts:

Over left front door ambient lighting LIN:

• Left front door ambiance illumination
• Left front door pocket lighting (Model 205.3/4)
• Left front door handle ambiance illumination

The left front door ambiance illumination LIN is looped via the left front door control unit.

Over right front door ambient lighting LIN:

• Right front door ambiance illumination
• Right front door pocket lighting (Model 205.3/4)
• Right front door handle ambiance illumination

The right front door ambiance illumination LIN is looped via the right front door control unit.

Via the left rear door ambient lighting LIN (Model 205.0/1/2, Model 253):

• Left rear door ambiance illumination
• Left rear door handle ambiance illumination
