Function requirements, general

Manual interior lights control in general

The manual interior lights control makes it possible to switch the interior illumination, the reading illumination, the mirror lamps and the glove compartment illumination on and off.

The manual interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for interior illumination

The overhead control panel control unit reads in the status of the dome lamp buttons directly and transmits it via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit and to the rear SAM control unit (Model 205.1). The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

The following components of the interior illumination are switched on or off manually by operating the front dome lamp button:

The following components of the interior illumination are manually switched on or off dimmed by operating the rear dome lamp button (Model 205.0/1/2/3, Model 253):

For model 205, Model 253.99 with code 531 (COMAND® APS) or model 253 with code 549 (Connect 20 HIGH (NTG6)), the interior lighting in the rear can also be activated or deactivated via voice control. The driver hands-free system microphone is directly read in by the head unit for this purpose. The head unit processes the speech signals and transmits the operation signals via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

Detailed information on the voice control can be found in a separate document.

In model 253 with code 77B (Contactless gesture control at front) the reading lamps can also be switched on or off by means of hand motions. For this, the hand motion sensor is read in by the head unit via the telematics CAN. The head unit processes the information and transmits the operation signals via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

Detailed information on gesture control can be found in a separate document.

In vehicles with code 876 (Interior Light Package), and except code 877 (Ambient lighting), the front SAM control unit also directly actuates the following components of the footwell lighting for the interior lighting:

In model 205.1, the rear SAM control unit also actuates the following components of the footwell lighting directly in addition to the interior lighting:

In vehicles with code 877 (Ambiance illumination), the front SAM control unit transmits the request for switching on the footwell lamps via the interior CAN to the ambiance illumination control unit. The ambient lighting control unit then actuates the following component parts:

Function sequence for reading illumination

The reading illumination serves to illuminate a defined area in front of the user, without having a distracting dazzling effect on the driver.

The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the reading lamp button and transits this via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the reading illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

The following reading lamp components can be switched on or off manually by pressing the reading lamp buttons:

IMPORTANT Model 205.1

as of model year 2019

with code U05 (Vanity mirror in the rear)

When the rear dome lamp buttons are first pressed, the rear vanity mirror dome lamps are actuated along with the rear reading lamps. When the rear dome lamp buttons are pressed a second time, only the rear reading lamps are actuated.

For model 205, Model 253.99 with code 531 (COMAND® APS) or model 253 with code 549 (Connect 20 HIGH (NTG6)), the left reading lamp and right reading lamp can also be activated or deactivated via voice control.

Function sequence for mirror lamps

The mirror lamp switches are supplied with voltage by the overhead control panel control unit. The following mirror lamps can be manually switched on or off by opening or closing the corresponding mirror covers:

The power supply is switched off by folding the sun visor closed or by locking the vehicle.

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), the power supply is switched off at t = 30 min. following circuit 15 OFF. The power supply for the left sun visor mirror lamp and the right sun visor mirror lamp is switched off when the vehicle is locked using the central locking (CL [ZV]) system.

Additional function requirements for glove compartment illumination

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 to the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN.

Function sequence for glove compartment illumination

The glove compartment lamp switch is supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit. Voltage is switched through to the glove compartment lamp by opening the glove compartment door.

When circuit 15C is switched off, the glove compartment lamp is switched off after 40 s.
