Function requirements, general
- Circuit 30 ON
Exterior lights, general
The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lights of the vehicle.
Several functions of the exterior lights are only restrictedly available if transport, production, roller or trade fair mode has been activated or if a testing function has been activated (e.g. Technical Inspection Association check).
- Transport mode:
Transport mode describes a special status during transport of the vehicle from the manufacturer's to the end customer's. In transport mode, only the base functions of the exterior lights (e.g. low beams, turn signal) are available.
If circuit 15 is ON and the vehicle is not at a standstill, the low beams are switched on automatically after 2 s. These conditions can also be fulfilled if the vehicle is moved in any direction by a vehicle lift or during loading.
- Production mode:
Production mode describes a special status during production of the vehicle. In production mode, only the base functions of the exterior lights (e.g. low beams, turn signal) are available. The switch position of the exterior lights switch is ignored.
If circuit 15 is ON and the vehicle is not at a standstill, the low beams are switched on automatically after 2 s. These conditions can also be fulfilled if the vehicle is moved in any direction by a vehicle lift or during loading.
- Roller mode:
Roller mode describes a special status for the time in which the vehicle is on a roller dynamometer (e.g. brake test, certification). In roller mode, only the daytime running lights are actuated, even when it is dark (request for auto on/off driving lights via the light sensor).
- Trade fair mode:
Trade fair mode describes a special status for the time in which the vehicle is exhibited (e.g. consumer fair, exhibition, presentation). In trade fair mode, all light functions can be switched on via the diagnostic tester (regardless of the switch position of the exterior lights switch).
- Check function:
All lighting functions can be switched on via the diagnostic tester for the technical vehicle inspection.
A differentiation is made between the following versions of the front lamp units in accordance with the vehicle equipment:
- Halogen headlamps

Function sequence for front lamp unit thermal management (LED headlamp (static) (Model 205 as of 01.06.2018, Model 253 (except model 253.99) as of 01.06.2019, Model 253.99), LED headlamp (dynamic))
The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the areas actuated by the LED. If the LED or the plastic housings for the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of excessively high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the actuating currents of the LEDs are reduced, thereby lowering the heat development. The headlamp control units evaluate the signals from five temperature sensors each. The front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting evaluate the signals of three temperature sensors each.
The following components are integrated into the front lamp units for active ventilation:
- Fan motor 1, left front lamp unit, actuated by left headlamp control unit (Model 205 as of 01.06.2018, Model 253 (except model 253.99) as of 01.06.2019, Model 253.99)
- Fan motor 2, left front lamp unit, actuated by left front LED matrix lamp unit control unit (LED headlamp (dynamic)) (Model 205 as of 01.06.2018, Model 253 (except model 253.99) as of 01.06.2019)
- Fan motor 2, left front lamp unit, actuated by left front LED exterior lighting actuation module (LED headlamp (dynamic)) (Model 205 up to 31.05.2018, Model 253 (except model 253.99) up to 31.05.2019)
- Fan motor 1, right front lamp unit, actuated by right headlamp control unit (Model 205 as of 01.06.2018, Model 253 (except model 253.99) as of 01.06.2019, Model 253.99)
- Fan motor 2, right front lamp unit, actuated by right front LED matrix lamp unit control unit (LED headlamp (dynamic)) (Model 205 as of 01.06.2018, Model 253 (except model 253.99) as of 01.06.2019)
- Fan motor 2, right front lamp unit, actuated by right front LED exterior lighting actuation module (LED headlamp (dynamic)) (Model 205 up to 31.05.2018, Model 253 (except model 253.99) up to 31.05.2019)
The fan motors are actuated as soon as the low beams or the high beams are switched on. The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.
Function sequence for increasing on-board electrical system voltage (halogen headlamps)
When the on-board electrical system voltage is decreased by the energy management below the minimum voltage of a light function during normal driving operation, the front SAM control unit can suppress shutoff of the corresponding light function. For this purpose, the front SAM control unit requests the minimum voltage necessary for the corresponding light function. The light functions for which the increase of the on-board electrical system voltage is to be activated can be defined at the end of production.
The following functions can be coded:
- Actuation of low beams in dark
- Backup light actuation
- Rear fog lights actuation
Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights
By switching off the exterior lights, the on-board electrical system load by the active standing or parking lights actuation is reduced.
Discharge of the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is prevented.
The low beams can be switched on because of the auto on/off driving lights, daytime running lights (only on vehicles with code 498 (Japan version) and halogen lamp unit) or manually via the exterior lights switch. It is automatically deactivated with circuit 15 OFF if the engine was switched off beforehand and the vehicle is at a standstill. The standing lights may be switched on because of the manually switched on low beams, the auto on/off driving lights, the daytime running lights (only on vehicles with code 498 (Japan version) and LED lamp unit) or manually via the exterior lights switch.
If the driver door is opened with terminal 15C ON or if the driver door is closed when terminal 15C is switched off, the standing light is switched off.
If the energy management system determines that the starting capability of the engine is impaired, the standing lights are switched off provided that they were manually activated (exterior lights switch in standing lights or parking lights position).
If the "Ambient illumination" function has been activated via the head unit, it automatically switches itself on when the engine is turned off. The standing lights remain on for the configured period from the point at which the last door, the trunk lid or the liftgate was closed.
