Function requirements, general 

Turn signal light actuation, general 

The turn signal light actuation consists of all functions for output of the turn signal, various warnings and feedback.

The master control unit for all turn signal functions is the SAM control unit (N10) (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) or the front SAM control unit (N10/6) (as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342). It prioritizes all turn signal requests and sends a flasher frequency with a time period for the bright phase of the turn signal lamps over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the corresponding control units.

The turn signal light actuation encompasses the following partial functions:

For vehicles as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342 the following applies: 

The currently active function is indicated to the driver by the left turn signal light control message or the right turn signal light control message. For acoustic feedback, the instrument cluster (A1) actuates the instrument cluster speaker (H4/61). In order to do this, the instrument cluster receives the flasher frequency sent by the front SAM control unit over the interior CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and the user interface CAN (CAN HMI). If a turn signal light or a turn signal lamp fails, the frequencies with which the turn signal light control message and the instrument cluster speaker are actuated double. The flashing frequencies of the turn signal lights and turn signal lamps remain at f = 1.5 Hz.

IMPORTANT The hazard warning flasher can be overridden by the turn signaling function and vice versa.

The parking system function can request turn signaling or override manually set turn signals.

Each active function is displayed for the driver by actuating the left turn signal light indicator lamp (A1e1) or the right turn signal light indicator lamp (A1e2) and the acoustic turn signal light function check (A1h2). The instrument cluster receives the flasher frequency sent by the SAM control unit via the interior CAN for this.

Each active function is displayed for the driver by actuating the left turn signal light indicator lamp or the right turn signal light indicator lamp and the turn signal light function check. To do so, the instrument cluster receives the flasher frequency sent by the SAM control unit via the interior CAN, stealth lights control unit (N1) and instrument cluster CAN (IC CAN).

If a turn signal light fails, the frequencies of the turn signal indicator lamps and the turn signal light function check in the instrument cluster double. The flashing frequency of the turn signal lights of f = 1.5 Hz also remains. If the failure of a turn signal light is detected during hazard warning flashing, the frequency of the turn signal light indicator lamps and the turn signal light function check does not double.

Additional function requirements for turn signaling 

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 status over the interior CAN to the SAM control unit.

Function sequence for turn indicators 

The turn signaling function comprises the following subfunctions:

Function sequence, left turn signaling 

The left turn signal function is requested by pushing the combination switch (S4) downward.

For vehicles as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342 the following applies: 

The steering column tube module control unit (N80) directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and sends it to the front SAM control unit via the chassis FlexRay (Flex E), electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN.

The front SAM control unit receives the switch position of the combination switch and transmits the "Left turn signal" (flasher frequency) request to the following control units:

The left headlamp control unit receives the flasher frequency and actuates the left turn signal lamp (E6/1) directly.

The rear SAM control unit receives the flasher frequency and actuates the following components in the left rear lamp unit (E3) directly:

The trailer recognition control unit receives the flasher frequency and actuates the left turn signal light on the trailer through the trailer socket (X58) (with code Q55 (Trailer coupling, ball head) or code Q59 (Trailer hitch, removable)).

With active tail light actuation, the turn signal light, brake light and the outer left tail light and the turn signal light, brake light and inner left tail light are not switched to dark by the flasher frequency. If the front fog light actuation is also active, the turn signal light, brake light and the inner left tail light are not actuated.

For vehicles up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342 the following applies: 

The steering column tube module control unit reads in the switch position of the combination switch directly and sends it over suspension CAN 1 (CAN E1), the electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the SAM control unit.

The SAM control unit receives the switch position of the combination switch and sends the "Left turn signaling" request (flasher frequency) over the interior CAN to the following control units:

In addition, the SAM control unit sends the request "Left turn signal" (flasher frequency) via the interior CAN in vehicles without code E11 (Stealth lights with convoy marking), and via the interior CAN, stealth lights control unit and instrument cluster CAN in vehicles with code E11 (Stealth lights with convoy marking), to the instrument cluster.

The SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:

The left front door control unit receives the flasher frequency and actuates the left outside mirror turn signal lamp (E6/5) (except model 463.342).

The trailer recognition control unit (except model 463.242) receives the flasher frequency and actuates the left turn signal light on the trailer through the trailer socket.

The instrument cluster actuates the left turn signal light indicator lamp directly.

Function sequence, right turn signaling 

The right turn signal function is requested by pushing the combination switch upward.

For vehicles as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342 the following applies: 

The steering column tube module control unit reads in the switch position of the combination switch directly and sends it via chassis FlexRay, the electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

The front SAM control unit receives the switch position of the combination switch and transmits the "Right turn signal" (flasher frequency) request to the following control units:

The right headlamp control unit receives the flasher frequency and actuates the right turn signal lamp (E6/2) directly.

The rear SAM control unit receives the flasher frequency and actuates the following components in the right rear lamp unit (E4):

The trailer recognition control unit receives the flasher frequency and actuates the right turn signal light on the trailer through the trailer socket (with code Q55 (Trailer coupling, ball head) or code Q59 (Trailer hitch, removable)).

In addition, the SAM control unit sends the request "Right turn signal" (flasher frequency) via the interior CAN in vehicles without code E11 (Stealth lights with convoy marking), and via the interior CAN, stealth lights control unit and instrument cluster CAN in vehicles with code E11 (Stealth lights with convoy marking), to the instrument cluster.

The SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:

The right front door control unit receives the flasher frequency and actuates the right outside mirror turn signal lamp (E6/6) (except model 463.342).

The trailer recognition control unit (except model 463.242) receives the flasher frequency and actuates the right turn signal light on the trailer via the trailer socket.

The instrument cluster actuates the right turn signal light indicator lamp directly.

Function sequence, one-touch turn signaling 

With regard to signal flow, the function sequence of the touch turn signal function corresponds to that of the left turn signal and right turn signal functions. The difference is in the triggering and ending of the turn signal procedure.

To trigger the touch turn signaling function, the combination switch must only be pressed briefly (t < 440 ms) in the desired turn signal direction. The SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) or the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342) issues three blinking cycles.

The one-touch turn signaling function is overridden when the hazard warning flasher function is actuated or the combination switch is activated in the opposite direction.

Function sequence, hazard warning flashing 

The hazard warning flasher function sequence is the same as that for turn signaling with regard to the signal flow.

However, all the turn signal lights and turn signal lamps on the vehicle are actuated synchronously.

On vehicles as of 03.04.2018 (except model 463.342) the front SAM control unit also actuates the indicator lamp in the hazard warning lights button (N72/1s57) in the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) directly, along with the control messages in the instrument cluster.

For vehicles up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342, along with the indicator lamps in the instrument cluster, the indicator lamp in the hazard warning lights button (N72/1s5) in the upper control panel control unit is also actuated by the SAM control unit over the battery sensor LIN (LIN B15) (without code E11 (Stealth light with convoy marking)) or over the battery sensor LIN, stealth light control unit and the stealth light LIN (LIN B40) (with code E11 (Stealth light with convoy marking)).

Depending on the status of circuit 15, two duty cycles are output by the SAM control unit:

The hazard warning flasher function comprises the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for hazard warning flashing, manual 

The manual hazard warning flasher function is activated by pressing the hazard warning system button.

For vehicles as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342 the following applies: 

The front SAM control unit reads in the status of the hazard warning system button directly and then initiates the hazard warning flasher function by outputting the flasher frequency.

Following this, all turn signal lights and turn signal lights on the vehicle are actuated synchronously.

The front SAM control unit also actuates the indicator lamp in the hazard warning system button.

For vehicles up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342 the following applies: 

The SAM control unit reads in the status of the hazard warning system button via the battery sensor LIN in vehicles without code E11 (Stealth lights with convoy marking) and via the stealth lights LIN, stealth lights control unit and battery sensor LIN in vehicles with code E11 (Stealth lights with convoy marking) and activates the hazard warning flasher function by issuing the flasher frequency. Following this, all turn signal lights and turn signal lights on the vehicle are actuated synchronously.

Additional function requirements for hazard warning flasher during maximum full-stop braking (except code ZU7 (National version for Canada) and except code ZU8 (National version for the USA)) 

Function sequence for hazard warning flasher during maximum full-stop braking (except code ZU7 (National version for Canada) and except code ZU8 (National version for the USA)) 

In the event of maximum full-stop braking, the Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) sends the "maximum full-stop braking" (Emergency braking) signal up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342 over suspension CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the SAM control unit or as of 03.04.2018 (except model 463.342) over the suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

If maximum full-stop braking decelerates the vehicle to a speed below v = 3 km/h, the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342) or the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342) activates the hazard warning flashing function by issuing a flasher frequency. Following this, all turn signal lights and turn signal lights on the vehicle are actuated synchronously.

The Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits the vehicle speed via the chassis FlexRay, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

The instrument cluster transmits the vehicle speed to the SAM control unit via the interior CAN.

The instrument cluster transmits the vehicle speed to the SAM control unit via the instrument cluster CAN, stealth lights control unit and interior CAN.

IMPORTANT The hazard warning flasher is deactivated by pressing the hazard warning system button or upon exceeding a speed of v = 10 km/h.

Function sequence for hazard warning flasher when airbag deployed 

For vehicles as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342 the following applies: 

When an airbag is deployed or during a rollover of the vehicle, the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10) sends the crash signal via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN as well as via a direct line to the front SAM control unit.

The front SAM control unit then initiates the hazard warning flasher function by issuing the flasher frequency. Following this, all turn signal lights and turn signal lights on the vehicle are actuated synchronously. Operation of the hazard warning system button or unlocking of the central locking (CL) system terminates the hazard warning flasher.

The front SAM control unit directly reads in the status of the hazard warning system button.

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of the central locking to the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN.

For vehicles up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342 the following applies: 

When an airbag is deployed the Supplemental Restraint System control unit sends the crash signal over suspension CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN and over a direct line to the to the SAM control unit.

The SAM control unit then activates the hazard warning flasher function by issuing the flasher frequency. Following this, all turn signal lights and turn signal lights on the vehicle are actuated synchronously. Operation of the hazard warning system button or unlocking of the central locking (CL) system terminates the hazard warning flasher.

Additional function requirements for hazard warning flasher when crash detected (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) 

Function sequence for hazard warning flasher when crash detected (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) 

A crash sensor is integrated into the SAM control unit. If this detects a crash event during a timeout period of the Supplemental Restraint System control unit, the SAM control unit activates the hazard warning flasher function by outputting the flasher frequency. This serves to avoid any inadvertent activation of the local crash sensor. Following this, all turn signal lights and turn signal lights on the vehicle are actuated synchronously.

Operation of the hazard warning system button or unlocking of the central locking (CL) system terminates the hazard warning flasher.

Function sequence, feedback from locking/unlocking of central locking (CL) 

When the central locking system is locked/unlocked, the electronic ignition lock control unit requests the hazard warning flashing function. To do so, the electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of the central locking over the interior CAN to the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) or to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342).

When unlocking the central locking system, the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) or the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342) actuates the hazard warning flashing function for one blinking cycle, and when the vehicle is locked three blinking cycles are issued. All turn signal lights and turn signal lamps are actuated at the same time on the vehicle.

Acoustic feedback also occurs in accordance with the flashing cycles by means of actuating the left horn (H2) and right horn (H2/1).

IMPORTANT All vehicle doors must be closed in order to output the flash cycles. The rear-end door is treated as a vehicle door.

Function sequence for hazard warning signal flashing (with code FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system) or code FZ8 (Alarm system)) 

When an ATA alarm is triggered, the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) or the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342) initiates the hazard warning flashing function by issuing the flasher frequency.

Following this, all turn signal lights and turn signal lights on the vehicle are actuated synchronously.
